Long time ago pointer/lab cross named Megan,

Pointing Rattlesnakes her whole front half would be crouched down on the ground trying to lean/get away from the snake. I would sneak up behind her and grab her by the tail and pull her away.

Don't make him walk on tile or hardwood floors. You could restrict him to areas with carpet, or if you don't have any pick up some those big room carpets on the cheap, 7 is awful young.

Diet and exercises can often help strengthen weak joints.

Good luck, always a very tough call.

I use beepers hunting deep pheasant cover. Set to beep every 10 seconds with hawk scream on point. Works very well.

Have never used GPS, would hate to have to wear reading glasses while hunting. Also, everybody hunting knows location of your dog with a beeper collar.

As an X-Trialer, I’m of the opinion that we should be discouraging Field Trials for anybody under the age of say 40, and for those over 40 who can’t show appreciable levels of disposable income and time.

Trialing should come with a warning label like cigarettes.

We hunt pheasant in very heavy, tall and dense cover in SD. (20 second single beep, hawk call on point). Your hunting the wrong type of cover. You need to go where the cover is thicker, taller, wetter, and denser. Been following pointers in SD for a decade. Our dogs pretty routinely average 20 to 30 points a day each and late in the season it's not unusual to see a lot more than that.
