I love wild birds but it sure is nice to see a pen raised bird walking around in front of a pup/dog that I have been training and the dog standing steady without moving a muscle. 8)

roosters don't always hold real well and those that flush wild are going to flush wild for a lab as well. I have never hunted with a pointer that used a hawk beeper, in my opinion they are not needed.
I agree, I think a lot of us Americans just like gimicks. :)

For me, it is more about the dog work than how many birds I can put in the bag. That being said, I still want to shoot some birds but do it with the dogs I enjoy the most, which for me is pointing dogs. In other words, I would use the type of dog I enjoy the most. :wink:

And from what the the OP has told us, the dog has had plenty of bird intro and has great prey drive. Why would anybody feel the need to continue with this or allow him to catch birds?? I mean I see no additional benefits to it but I could see plenty of bad things coming from it. JMO.

Yah I used my sport dog 400 on my throat up to level 4 and my friend went to 5 but I only go up to 4 on my lab if its necessary. It doesn't sound like a problem at all to me. The whoa command is an obedience/safety command. As long as he stops and stands still, there is no problem IMO. As another poster said, I would very highly doubt there will be any head movement when pointing birds.
