Higgins, that is more what I have seen in terms of a positive flush on command! Just have trouble finding a video clip of it to show others. Thanks. Re: VIDEO: Pointer & Setter Championship Stake
Trekmoor, I was always under the impression that in the UK trials, a positive flush on command is desired. I have rarely seen it on dvd or video, however. Friends in the UK and Sweden indicate that in their trials they want to see a very positive and precision flush from the dog, from moving in dire...

Thank you two for the good explanations Interesting breed. Is the tail genuinely "naturally short"? Have read this about the Brittany, but never heard of any actually born that way (first hand).

Check this one out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6yw5v6WHuM This is the 2011 European Pointer Championships, held in Serbia. This is one of the Classical European field trials. Teams from various countries compete, and I believe there are individual as well as team awards. Run on short grass or ...

Re: Difference between a 1hr vs 30 minute dog
I found this a very interesting thread. Our trials are run very differently over here, so it's of value to me to read qualified responses to very specific questions about the US trials and what is required of the dogs in different types of stakes. Thanks!

Zephyr, what you posted was much appreciated :D :D ! I didn't find much on their website, and couldn't even find the list of invited dogs. I ...

It might also help to use a flank hitch, sort of suitcase handle style when he is near you on lead/checkcord. This will help you keep the dog's rear up and will get him used to pressure on his flank as well - which you'll be using when you raise his hindquarters. It's important that he doesn't view ...

Re: whoa training ....why is it so important?
Whether it's "whoa", "stay", "sit" or "down", the most important thing is consistency of use and consistency of response. The dog should do this immediately, and you should work toward that. Your perfection of whatever command you choose (whoa, stay, sit, down) should be done in close quarters befor...

Re: Retrieving to hand....except for bumpers out of the water
Previous posts all good advice. Follow that advice :) Also, you might try simply throwing the dummy at the water's edge - not in the water - and see if you can't develop the delivery from there. Sort of reverse the process for success (maybe!). If this works, keep it up for a while to develop a patt...

Re: Field Trial Question - Commands allowed?
Don, in a retrieving trial here (HPR) the dog may move some if necessary to mark the fall, without penalty under the rules, although some judges might penalize the dog for it. In non-retrieving trials (British Breed or Pointer) moving to mark the fall would be heavily penalized, and most likely elim...

Field Trial Question - Commands allowed?
Hi All, I am curious as to what is allowed, or not allowed, in terms of any sort of commands that are allowed to be used in a field trial during flushing of the bird, after the flush, and after the shot and/or retrieve. In our field trials in South Africa, at Open or Championship Stake level, you ma...

Re: VIDEO, Steady to Wing, Shot, Fall
As I watched the video, what occurred to me is the that dog crouches as the handler is walking back in anticipation of the throw. I don't know how it was accomplished that the dog understands not to move forward, but apparently he does. So his anticipation of the throw of the bird induces a differen...

Re: A misunderstanding maybe ?
It seems that in several posts the assumption is made that a "quartering" dog is being steered or handled throughout to go where the handler directs him/her to go. Why? A dog can quarter (and I use this term rather loosely), meaning it can hunt in a systematic manner, using the wind and terrain or c...

I can't really comment on callbacks and retrieving in the AKC/AF/USA Pointing/Continental field trials, but regarding many of the postings on the current topic, I would pose a question to the statement below (and others like it): RayG = Bird dogs have never lost their "natural ability" to retrieve, ...
