Re: Pigeon grit

I just let all my pigeons out every morning for some exercise and let them find what they need for themselves. I often see them in the nearby fields or along the sides of the roads getting all the grit they need. They've been around for a long time, so they must be getting what they need and it's on...

Re: Questions about Shaving a Longhaired Dog

I have a good friend and hunting buddy who raises Drathaars (SP?) He has told me many times that one should NEVER shave one of these german dogs. It will ruin their undercoat to the point where it will never be the same. FWIW.

Re: Tell me all about wirehaired pointing griffons

I don't own one, but I have hunted over several. I actually bought my cousin, with whom I hunt all the time, one because it was a much better fit for the type of hunting he liked to do. He started out with a couple of big running setters and he never could get into them being as far away as they wor...

Re: Anyone ever have problems with snakes?

Bit by a rattler in KS. Wasn't in a position to do anything about it at the time. Gave her some Benedryl and waited. She was back to hunting 3 days later.

Re: how many pigeons do you keep?

I started with 6 pigeons about 11 years ago. Today I have 30 with a dozen eggs under hens. I generally give a few squeakers away to people wanting to start lofts each year and will shoot a few during the training season. My goal is to get back down to about 12-15 birds going into the hunting season ...

Re: Planting Birds...

For years I have used chukar over and over by tying about 3-4 feet of string to their leg and attaching the other end to a 10oz. water bottle. I can control how far I want the birds to fly by how much water I put in the bottle. Generally about 1" of water will allow the bird to fly 20 to 30 yards. O...

Re: Sending dogs away for training.

Check, double check and verify everything you can about your trainer and his/her methods. Like any industry, there are good ones and bad ones and it's up to you to find out which are which. Be sure you know what you are expecting and then make sure the trainer knows what you are expecting and get it...

Re: no no in training

I'll add my 2 cents. Always remember that dogs are dogs and not people. Dogs only know reward and punishment. Of course verbal praise and gentle touching/stroking are forms of rewards. Tugs on a check cord or stimulation from an e-collar are forms of punishment. As much as you may want or like to, y...

Re: Dog Barking

I have 4 dogs and live in a neighborhood, so I can't have them barking all day. I have found that bark collars work really well, but you have to get a good one and be consistent in its use for several weeks. The ones they generally sell in pet stores are a waste of money. I know, I went through seve...

Re: Back after a long absence

Welcome back, I like the look of the dog in your avatar. Yea, he's my old boy, my "Once in a life-time dog" It's really sad to watch his abilities and performance decline, but I certainly have a lot of memories to fall back on. I consider every minute I have in the field with him at his point bonus...

Back after a long absence

I haven't been on this board for a long time. I really don't know why, I just kinda forgot about it with everything else going on in my life. But this time of year, it's easy to get a little bored so in looking for things to keep me busy, I rediscovered that I actually am a member of this forum. Wha...

I have personally always used Tri-tronics and never had a serious problem. I have had to call customer support a couple of times and they have always been terrific to work with. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the top brands. You just have the pick the one that looks best to you, fits you...

Re: why did you chose your breed of dog?

I've owned Weims, Vizsla, & EPs. Some were good dogs, none were great. I've also hunted over Brits, Labs, GSPs, GWPs, Draths and Griffs. But when I saw my first English setter on point with its head and tail held high I was hooked for life. I also field trial my dogs ( I have 3) and regardless of ho...

Do You Hunt Fast or Slow?

I'm doing a little research just to justify my existence among my circle of hunting buddies. I've asked this question on a couple of other forums that I frequent, so if you've seen it there and responded, thx, no need to respond again. If you haven't seen it before I'd love to hear what you have to ...

One last chukar hunt - closing day

Me and the 3 "kids" set out for one last try for the devil birds. Sadie, my 9 month old wasn't quite sure what this was all about. http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/shagrunner-utah/CIMG1318.jpg We started straight up the mountain. She kept checking back as if to ask, "Are you sure you really ...

We were actually west of Vernon and north of Delta, about 2 hours west of Provo in the Thomas Range. I guess I can say that since it really isn't "hot spotting" as we didn't get any birds. Altho' we saw a rather large covey flush wild. The most amazing thing was the lack of snow. I have well over a ...

Last chuckar hunt in Utah

I went out last Saturday with my 3 dogs hoping to get into one last covey of chuckar. As it turned out, we only saw one covey and they flushed out of range. But I thought I'd share some photos for your consideration. Sadie, my 9 mo. old surveying the territory. http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa1...

I grew up in So. Cal but I've lived in N. Utah for over 35 years. I've hunted and fished quite a bit throughout the area. I think it's a great place to live and play. Within minutes you can be in pristine mountains to the east and equally pristine desert country to the west. We have more national pa...

The pups are growing so fast that I don't have any current photos. But, like I said, I'm taking them hunting this weekend and I'll make a point of getting some good pix to send along. Thanks for asking.

Hi: My name is Jeff, aka. Shagrunner. I live in Provo, Utah. I have 3 English setters, one male (3 yrs. - avatar) and 2 females, (9 mos and 8 mos respectively). We hunt dove, all the grouse found here in the West, pheasant and chuckar. We'll be going out this Saturday and next Thursday for chuckar a...
