Re: AKC field trials question

Side casting is generally frowned upon in FT. I also do not like it in hunting, wind can carry scent quite a ways and a dog will waste a lot of time running through cover that its nose has already found out nothing was there.

IMO most "breeders" are clueless. They just have a bunch of dogs they breed, and dont really do a lot with their current dogs. Do you have any idea how many days you have to hunt to effectivley use 6-8 dogs. A LOT. Stay away from breeders IMO, I buy pups from dedicated people that actively hunt/tria...

FT dog pointing birds

With the recent discussion about how impossible it is to have a dog point birds 250+ yards away and still have birds there when you arrive. This is not unique to us, this happens more often than it does not happen. Reggie pointed these birds about 275 yards in front of us, I strolled over and missed...

The bigger issue to me is bringing the dog in cold and wet from hunting and putting him in a cold crate in the back of a pickup with no heat. I have seen a dog die from that. I do like my dogs to be comfortable. So, I would either cover the crate good or try to use a small electric heater. When I u...

You can kill lots of birds with a 100 yard dog. You can kill lots of birds with a 400 yard dog. All about personal preference.

I have owned both, and one is not any better than the other. Sometimes I wished my dogs ran a little closer! :)

I cant imagine hiking in full insulated carhart bibs.... I wear wind proof pants with thermals. I wear a few different layers on top with a beanie. If your hiking it does not take much clothing to keep you warm. Too much and you will sweat to death.

It depends on the stage of the dogs life.

All I ever train with is wild birds, and I cannot imagine having to use pigeons!

I dont think people realize the amount of time and effort it takes to really develop a nice dog. Just running out and pointing a pigeon or a wild bird for the first time is not a "nice" dog.
