This can happen in both AKC and AF if the judges do not feel there is a performance worthy of being named Champion. If this happens the placements are awarded as a week end stake and the word Championship is dropped.
I saw this happen at the AKC Pointer National Open Championship.

I do not have the final scheduale but it is my understanding that there will be a delay between the retrieving and non-retrieving stakes. My guess is Fritz will run on Sat. that is strictly a guess. Running orders are now up for the retrieving and non-retrieving championships. They drew 100 dogs for both stakes. 42 retrieving, 58 non-retrieving.

You asked about hay or straw for beding. Hay is IMHO the better to use as it does not splinter like straw. You should be able to get hay at any local feed store.
