Re: dog training today
If your wife had any sense, she would have kicked you out years ago. :) Sorry to hear that neighbor, but it serves you right for not inviting me to get in on the quail!!! Nitrex hey nitrex i would have invited you to come along but everytime i invite you to go we never seem to find the quail. I don...

dog training today
So I took my dog out today to run him on some quail. He had his first find before he even had a chance to drop his load :D He had a nice point on about 6 quail. He hunted about 1/2 hr and I found him standing tall on another covey of quail. Then about 10 minutes later I hear some barking and growlin...

I totally agree with Ezzy if you have a problem with your neighbor talk to them first about. If my dog was barking or was doing something else that bothered, annoyed or concerned my neighbor, I would hope they would come talk to me first and see if we can solve the problem without the police. Pool's Elhew Snakeye and he was a walking trial dog, he was later sold and campaigned in horseback trials. I haven't seen many pups sired by him. I don't know about how many of his offspring are on the field trial circuit, but just in the last year it seems like I have seen numerous litters sired b...

I work for an agriculture testing lab. We mainly run nutritional analysis on animal feed. Cattle feed in particular. We have been running a lot of toxin test this year including afflatoxin. In my head if its bad for cattle it is probably bad for deer and other wildlife. Thanks for making this articl...

I remember 1 20 covey opening day, but that was 10 years ago. Now were doing good to move more than 10. And unfortunately the pheasant numbers are down as well.

Re: EP What line? best bird finders
There is a lot more to finding birds than just a good nose. My brother has a little miller bred female. She is a bird finding fool. She doesn't find these birds just because she has a good nose. I think a lot of it is smarts. She just has knack for finding birds. In years past when we would go hunti...

First two birds
I took my wife out hunting this weekend, and she came home with her first two birds. She has hunted with me occasionally for the past three years. This was the first time she came home with a bird in hand. She was starting to say that there was something wrong with her gun. It was my first gun a rem...

We went out opening day. We had 6 hunters and 9 dogs 8 pointers and 1 setter. We hunted all day. moved 1 rooster 1 hen and 6 coveys. The birds were down from last year. Every one was saying that the bird numbers were up. We were hunting in central KS. Did not hunt on Sunday due to rain and more rain...

Ray, You bring up a good point with being productive with different sires. That is why I think Hanna's Elhew Lou is great. She has produced, possibly, the top 3 all-time winningest shooting dogs ever all out of 3 different sires. Elhew Swami(16xCH-14xRU) by Elhew Jefferson, Elhew Sunflower(15xCH-3x...

I like the way you think/hunt shadow. some of the people I hunt with think my dog runs to big for pheasant. It might be true but I would rather hunt alone with my dog than with a large group and no dog.

These pictures were taken right outside the back door of my house. Maybe I should quit pheasant and quail hunting and take up turkey hunting http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs235.snc1/8219_1273186068993_1210152869_30805417_7137182_n.jpg http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs235...

Re: how did you guys get into hunting and bird dogs?
I started hunting with my family when I was 13. My dad my brother and I would go hunting with my uncle and two cousins every pheasant and quail opener. We still go except my uncle has passed away. One of my cousins who happens to be Bryce Flaming would bring his dogs. So I can honestly say I started...

I know you want that specific dog, but if he is offering you a pup out of Elhew Fibber McGee I would take the Fibber McGee pup. Elhew Fibber McGee is a great dog and a great producer. I would have to say Hanna's Elhew Lou. She has produced multi champions dogs from different sires. In the last eight years one of her daugters has won the shooting dog of the year 7 times. Not only does she produce winners but her offspring produce winners as well. Elhew Sinbad is a grandson of Hann...

Central Kansas Quail Opener Update
Man what a great weekend. Took my 3 yr old EP (Boone) out last weekend for the traditional family quail opener. Boone had 9 points and 1 back for the weekend. For his one back he was backing the all time great Elhew Sunflower. She was buried deep in the brush in the water way, and He was standing ta...

Re: Dove Hunting and Pointing Breed advice
If she is not retrieving well, I would not take her out. Alot of dogs do not like to retrieve dove because of there feathers. I think that taking her out and trying to get her to retrieve the dove could be a set back in her retrieve training.
If it was me I would leave her at home

Growing up I did most of my hunting with an older cousin of mine who had and has some of the best EP's. I always enjoyed hunting behind his dogs. About three years ago he made me an offer on one of his pups that I couldn't turn down. After 2 1/2 yrs of training him, I don't think I would train him f...

To answer a few questions. He will be 3yrs old in Aug. He can get up and move. I don't trial him, but have had a few people say that if I let him open up he would run a shooting dog race. Yes I did get him from Bryce, and the dam is Elhew Cowboy. The Sire is Prairieland Squire which is a littermate ...

I would not worry about this episode with the fireworks. I would guess if he is properly introduced to the gun later on he will be fine. Fireworks are different than gun shots. My 3 yr old EP who is broke to wing and shot, and the gun shots do not bother him at all does not like fireworks. I let him...
