Wow this is an old post. During this season my beeper stopped working. Going to send it back to get it fixed once goose season is closed.

Re: Garmin Astro Owners, how far does your dog run?

My gsp was doing 20 miles on a 3-4 hour hunt. When we were up in maine hunting in very rough cover for three days each day she'd slow down a bit and do less miles on each succesive day. Funny thing is, since she came out of her first heat she is much slower and methodical in her hunting. Now rather ...

Re: Maine Grouse hunt

Just got home. It was slower than I expected, but we still got into some birds every day. I found two new covers on my last day that held birds, and managed to get one grouse (eight flushes in all), but didn't see a woodcock all week.Of course, that's probably because I was spending my time up high...

Re: Garmin Astro tips or tricks

I've got one- you can load both the topo maps and the city navigator maps on the same SD card if its big enough. However the city navigator is the default top layer. To turn it off hit the menu button and got to "map setup". You"ll see some icons at the top of the screen, use the arrow keypad to hig...

Re: Maine Grouse hunt

Yeah, thats her in my avatar. It was pretty great up there, it was peak color, and alot of the leaves were off the trees which made it easier. I could not believe the number of grouse we saw. I live in CT and I have not jumped a grouse in quite some time. I had her on lots of pen raised quail, pheas...

Re: Walking in Horse back trial, and a ?

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I've never ridden along in a horseback field trial. So this may be a stupid question , but what happens when the dog goes on point? Does the handler get off the horse to flush? I trained my dog to release from whoa with a tap on the head, obviously not possible f...

Re: Garmin - First 30 Days

I just got back from 3 days of hunting in Maine (I posted in the hunting section if you're interested), and I like the Garmin even more. We put alot of miles in and it performed flawlessly. I used it to navigate the roads on the way up, Kept track of the dog, no malfunctions (and it got banged up pr...

Maine Grouse hunt

Went to the moosehead lake area with my 13 month old pup for her first "real" wild bird hunt. I had her in upstate New York a couple weeks ago with very little bird contact, so I'll call this her first real hunt. -Day 1: 20 flushes, 15 grouse 5 woodcock. She bumped every one, ran right over the top ...

Re: Just booked lodging in NH

I bought my Maine hunt/fish combo online & printed it out. I was advised by some native Mainers that #6 is the way to go, although a lot of people say 7-1/2's. I'm in the #6 camp. I know I don't need a waterfowl stamp for woodcock, but do need a HIP number. Anyone know if my NJ HIP# is good in Main...

Re: Garmin - First 30 Days

I've had a little trouble with mine, which I'm sure is operator error. The default postion for what the dog is doing is "treed". I can switch it to "point" okay, but when I turn it off and use it another time, it's back to "treed". Anyone had this problem at all? Also, sometimes I found the arrow w...

I think those rem oil pre soaked little rags in the tear open pouch are the greatest thing since sliced bread. I always find that when I have a spray can of lube I end up wasting half of it.

Re: Garmin - First 30 Days

I've tried calling Garmin tech support- every time I call I end up getting a message that the waiting time will be something like 30 minutes. I think I will email them. I went on their web site and used the look up feature in their FAQs which is pretty helpful, but I have not been able to find anyth...

Re: Garmin - First 30 Days

The base maps don't have much detail, but you don't really need any if all you're doing is tracking the dog. I loaded the topo maps and city navigator because I use it for a GPS in my car. City navigator is the default top layer, I just go in and turn it off when I'm on a hunt or in the woods tracki...

Re: Garmin - First 30 Days

I got even more POd about this today. I had bought the topograhic maps and city navigator on cd rather than preloaded SD cards, so I told myself at least I wouldn't have to buy those again- WRONG - Garmin only lets you load the city navigator onto one unit, so I have to pay another $99. I can reload...

Re: Garmin - First 30 Days

Don't do what I did- I lost the handheld unit on my very first hunt with it. It seemed pretty secure on the belt clip which I had secured to my vest, but I looked down, the clip was still there but no astro. Boy was I mad.

Re: Garmin Astro - 2nd thoughts

I emailed gun dog supply and they suggested I do the same thing, they also confirmed I could cut it which is what I probably will do. I just wasn't sure if there were any wires in between the layers of nylon that far down. My rationale for buying it is that I needed a good handheld GPS, so why not s...

Re: Garmin Astro - 2nd thoughts

My astro came in yesterday. This thing is pretty cool. One thing I would warn people about, the literature states it will fit a dog with a 12" neck, my GSP is small, only about 45 pounds and I measure her neck at 16". I've got to have the collar tightened down to two or three holes from th GPS trans...

Re: Jackman, Maine grouse hunting

I already checked out the Maine DEC website, I have never seen a spruce grouse, but it seems that it would be fairly easy to tell them apart sitting on the ground, but flying? I don't know. We're going up before deer season and Moose won't be open while we'll be there so we should be good.

Jackman, Maine grouse hunting

Well I booked the cabin for our October trip to Maine. Anyone ever hunt around Jackman, Maine? We've heard there is some good grouse cover up there and lots of birds. This will be my first hunting season with my shorthair and I'm pretty excited. If everything goes as planned we'll be doing some Hare...

Count on it...hopefully you can run her alone and still enjoy it. Is it Ok to run her when in Heat? I'm just afraid of here running off an either getting lost, or running across some male and I end up with mutt puppies. She will be the only bird dog we're bringing. We are also bringing my dad's int...

First heat cycle

My shorthair just turned a year old and has not had her first heat yet. I'm planning on going up to Maine for some grouse hunting in early October and will probably book the camp tonight. So what are the odds that she goes into heat just in time to coincide with the trip? With my luck that's exactly...

I called dogtra today- the thing rolling around is infact the motion sensor. The part on the transmitter that turns is there so you can replace it. Apparently they've found that dogs often chew on this part because it protrudes so they made it so it can be easily replaced.

Dogtra 2500 T&B anyone have one?

I just got one of these any was wondering if anyone else had one and could answer these questions- 1.) on the beeper horn you can turn it. It has a "open" and close direction printed on it.Whatis this for? The manual doesn;t mention it at all. 2.) If I shake it it seems have comething rolling around...

I'm right there with you. I ran my 7 month old pup in a couple tests and she caught some birds, for the first time ever. No more hunt tests for her and I'm going back to pigeons in launchers for a while. The nice thing about pigeons is they don't land so she can't chase them down.
