The real issue is not all dogs with titles are great and all dogs without titles are not poor or even average. Many an excellent bird dog has never been in a hunt test or a trial. Knowing as much as possible about the Sire and Dam goes a long ways towards getting a puppy that has good odds to suit ...

Several years ago I read an article where someone was using their pointing dogs to point rabbits, while they shot them with their bow and arrows.
If I remember right , they were quite successful.
They shot them while they were sitting.

Try your best to always flush the bird to the front, or as near the front as possible, then accept the results as they come as you know and trust your dog, as only you can!

Have you taken him back to the training field, if not that should test his nose (especially with a hard plant) and if it isn't his nose, it may be time to reinforce what is expected of him! :)

Anyone having trouble with their dog not eating on the road; I would like to recommend that they look into Satin Balls, worked good for my dogs, while hunting five or more hours a day on the road, kept their energy up, and helped them eat a little of their kibble too.
