Jeff, they SHOULD have bird work to be called back. You could run grey hounds with the same results without the bird work. When you talk about the best of the best they should have bird work to even be considered. What I hear, is that the first am course really hasn't produced birds at all...and so...

Out of the 6 that went birdless how many had unproductives? Is there to much emphasis on run and not enough on bird finding ability. I have never seen a field trial premium that forbid stud horses on the grounds, and I have never heard of an AKC or AF rule stating that they were not allowed. I have seen studs being ridden at more than a few trials, and they caused a lot fewer problems than your typical mare in heat. What would a...

OK, that was a little bit off on my end, I'll admit it, but you could still change my mind if there's proof that closing the hunting season (say Jan/Feb) helped the birds survive and increased their numbers in any given area.
Is there such a study available?

The only problem I have with letting go of the February season is that's about the only time grouse hunters have the woods alone. If you look at the deer seasons this year they basically run from Sept. 24th through Jan. 1st non stop (with the exception of 2 days, Oct 29th and 30th) So you have 2 day...
