Re: GunDog food for sensitive stomach?

Try the Venison Potato and other "protein" based foods. Your vet may have some (probably expensive) and the pet stores will usually have a couple to choose from. My V had a bunch of intestinal issues and these foods seemed to help.

Don't know about you guys... but I think Pigeons are a pain to bring down. I have failed to knock down more pigeons in training sessions than anything else I have gone after.

I use 2 3/4 # 6's for pheasant, and # 7.5's for the smaller birds. I think you'll find there is a wide range of opinions on this one. I also don't buy the expensive shells or the cheapest. I try to stay somewhere in the middle. 99 out of 100 times that I miss I have to remind myself it is me and not...

Re: New Vizsla Pup

We are on the same page. I think the difference is that I was fortunate with my first one that he just seemed to pick it up faster. Otherwise you and I have very similar ideas about how this should be done. I have in a small crate, with a divider up to make it just big enough for him to walk in and ...

New Vizsla Pup

I recently added (4 weeks ago) another Vizsla pup. He is 11 weeks old today. Compared to my First V, (who is now 2) this little guy is totally failing in the potty training dept. If Levi got an A, this guy sure seems to be failing. Anyway, I am hoping that some of you have had similar experiences an...

Re: summer training issues

Tough time for bird scenting. I have been noticing the same thing training my V. He is getting initial scent from a distance but isn't locking in until he is pretty close. Also working on the steadying process. Last week he did great, this week both birds were so close to him when they took off (and...

Re: E-Collar Recommendation

I can't give you a lot of technical "why," but I would go for the 2-dog Dogtra. I think it's the 2500T&B ? I have the 3500 NCP and before that I had a TriTronics. As dumb as it sounds... the Dogtra fits it my hand better. i.e., I can hit the necessary buttons more easily/ergonomically than I could w...

Re: Preserve hunts ... what's GOOD about them?

Without Preserves my dog wouldn't be able to get the experience that he needs. I don't find fault at all in those who don't like preserves and refuse to go to them. There is nothing better than a point on a wild bird and putting that wild bird in the bag. Again, with that said... I need the preserves.

Newbie here, My not quite 2yr old Vizsla and I are on our first "season" of bird hunting. Mostly at preserves. Things I have noticed/learned about his pointing... -When he is searching for a dead bird, I have seen him point them. This is typically only on those occasions where it has taken him a whi...

Re: Should our dogs wear blaze?

I put this chest guard on my Viz. It helps her not get ripped up as much, keeps her safe from all of these maniacs here in NJ that will shoot at anything moving, and it helps me easily spot her (she blends in with the cover so easily. http://images115.fotki.com/v686/photos/1/14762/6920001/Picture01...

Re: Gun safes

I have a safe that is rated for 23 guns. It's a nice safe by a reputable company. But all that aside, it is FULL and I do not own 23 guns. If I owned 23 guns I seriously believe that I would need like a 36+ gun safe. (Can't remember how the big dawgs are rated)

Just my 3.5 cents. :D

Re: Training a Pointing Dog Under a Year Old?

I received my perfect start DVD last week it took about 2 weeks to get. I ordered it from there website. It will be well worth the wait. IMHO it is way better then any of the books I read, it just makes since. I am with a lot of the others let the dog lead the time line. By 12 weeks I had mine comi...

Re: crate training

My current Vizsla HATED his crate. He was a freakin' crybaby. I thought he was never going to learn to deal with it. Took a lot longer than what I have noticed in most other dogs, etc. He eventually got it, just had to use up a lot of patience to do it. He is a great pet and companion, but soft. I h...

Re: Michigan Dog Legislation Targets YOU

I live in Michigan and as some can imagine our Economy currently leaves this state in not the greatest of situations. I have to believe that our tax dollars could be spent worrying about much greater issues. It's too bad. I'd hate to think that next summer I couldn't pick up another Vizsla from a br...

Friendly bet says Allergy. Regardless I wish you the best... as a kid my dad had springers. I remember one who developed allergies during a pregnancy and her coat was never the same. Re: Grouse and woodcock hunting

Nice reply ruffshooter. You summed it up nicely. In Wi. and Mi., forget about doing much hunting until mid october. It is too hot, there are too many leaves, and the birds aren't dispersed. Go North in Wi. Take a line E to W from Green Bay to Wausau, and hunt North of that line. North Wind Grouse H...

I feel your pain. But I can't imagine what my 15 month old V would do in my house alone without me for more than an hour on his own. He has to be in his crate. It took me months to get him used to it. He can't have anything in it with him. He was a big cry baby as a puppy. He is definitely a soft do...
