never shoot a bird you call safety on. if you miss you will get a zero on retrieve. don't chance it. call a safety and be done.
it's kind of like golf. if someone tells you a putt is good and you putt it and miss you lost a stroke. just pick it up and walk away

is your dog whoa broke? dont let him take all those steps. if he starts roading in or creeping in launch the bird and whoa him. He will learn real quick if he smells a bird he better stop or its flying away. i would have launched the bird when he was in the road and was on point then started moving ...

Re: Could the dogs of 50 years ago win today?
I think if you just time traveled the dog 50 years ahead in time, then no it would not even stand a chance. If that dog was born today, and had the same training then yes. Look at humans, If you watch the NBA, NFL, or MLB you will eventually start to notice some of the star players from ten years a...

Re: Could the dogs of 50 years ago win today?
Of course some of these dogs would be competitive. Does anyone think that genetics can be transformed in 50 years. The overall "average" is probably higher but I doubt the greats of today are any greater than the greats of yesteryear. Would they be competing under the same rules, with the same expe...

Re: could another breed run the nat champ?
I'm going to take a wild guess here. If anyone owned a dog other than a pointer or english setter that could qualify for the NC at Ames, they would jump in with both front feet. Getting a gsp there ( or other breed) that could compete and DNA would be another matter. Such an ignorant response. Do y...

IMO the retreiving stakes using callbacks are a joke. You can teach any dog to retreive so what does it really accomplish? The callbacks are quite embarrasing to watch. Retreive on course arent bad. THe only thing the call backs really prove is how steady your dog is when he sees a bird fall in fron...

It will never happen, Why would someone place a breed other than a pointer or setter in the top spot of a qualifying event. So he could be shamed out of ever judging again? When I asked if dogs should be judged/titled based on conformation, shows like the AKC and Westminster shows you see on TV is the last thing I meant. What I'm refering to is the dogs being evaluated more for form, pracitcal form. Chest, straightness of limbs, tail set, bite, to make sure there isn'...
