Re: Red setter vs irish setter

Taking a FDSB dog and registering it AKC then using that dog to defend AKC dogs as good hunters is illogical. You could take a AKC show champion and register it FDSB then use it as an example of elegantly conformed AF dogs too but it would not be logical.

After reading the OP a second time, I would say they are overall very different. If your interest lies in akc showing an akc Irish setters would be a wise choice. If you are looking for a hunting dog the red setter would be your best bet.

I find them comparable to pheasant. They are a ball to hunt over a pointer so I actually prefer hunting them to pheasants with a pointing dog.

No but he looks like a nice dog. I like early starters and natural retrievers myself. I would call and talk to the owner about him.
I also like that he is still a young sire.

Wild apple kennel I believe has some nice elhew blood out of Wynot ace. I think nitro kennels and superior kennels has elhew blood too. I have heard that crossing Blackhawk to elhew is pretty good nick. Matt has some nice dogs with elhew fiber base.

Natural backing is definately genetic, but it can be trained in as well. I have seen both naturals and non backers in the same litter.
