My how so little has changed in 4 years, the age old argument field trial dogs can't handle wild birds. It is good to see DGfavor is still here to set the record straight.

I want my dog to stop on first scent. With a good nose and decent scenting conditions, they are pointing at good distances. I don't like a dog to road in on a bird just to get close. That ends up with more bumped birds, and I don't shoot bumped birds. How far you like a dog to point off their birds...

I seem to have the most success with a mid morning thermal, this is generally a light 3-5 MPH upward draft. It seam to be the sweet spot between the correct humidity and temperature with enough velocity to carry scent a good distance without dissipating the scent to much.

IMO A dog should not have to be commanded to stay off and not jump up. When I have an issue with jumping I grab both front feet and step firmly on the back one it does not take long for them to get the picture the biggest thing is consistency have anyone who gets jumped on do it.

To me this depends on the situation, if you are preserve hunting on canned birds that may be easily caught I would leave the pup at home. If you are hunting wild birds I would take the pup and shoot properly handled birds. I always like to allow a dog to learn to handle birds, make sure to keep quie...

Have the dog sterilized because generally this is passed on from the mother but it is also hereditary. It's not the mites that are bad its the immune system of the dog. Pretty simple for me... You can't judge what you did not see. When in doubt I always ask myself how I would have viewed this action if I were hunting, if I wo...
