Re: Do you hunt your trial dog?

There was a guy I spoke with on this board via PM several months ago who said a pro told him his dog was born with potential for trials, but he'd been hunted too much and wouldn't make a trial dog now (broke AF trials). There is a big difference in the manners enforced by a hunter and the manners e...

Re: Does having a GPS collar modify Spot's range/handle?

Without a doubt the GPS collar allows an increased comfort level for certain handlers. With the increased comfort level some handlers will allow the dog more air than they would normally, thus allowing the dog to stretch out more. I do believe that there are people out there that will require a dog ...

If a breed or an organization has a conformation standard, should genetic disclosure be included? Not talking about parentage, but things like PRA and vWD. No necessity...trialing sorts it all out. We are talking apples and oranges when you compare the big show at Ames and the GWP Nationals, you are talking apples and oranges when you try to compare a GWP to a pointer or setter they just are not bred for the same application. Well, I will only say this. I have run in the GWP Nationals and a f...

Great post Wagonmaster... The field trial sorts that all out. Sorts out a lot but no competition, test, evaluation, etc is a surrogate for a breeder knowing what he/she sees. How do unsoundly structured trial dogs get beaten up year after year and then go and compete at Ames for 3 hours at 8,9 and 10 years old? It is not as much about how bird dogs or trial dogs are built but more so how they are wired and what is in their head. What sets performance dogs aside is their...

They're half hour braces. x2 x 3 I don't typically see a big slowdown in my dogs till they hit the 15-20 mile range, depending on the temps this is genaerally in the 1.5 to 2 hr range. I will run them like this for up to 3 days in a row. I would not be worried about 1/2 hr stakes the dog should be ...

Conformation is about the "look" of a dog. Looks is the only thing that separates breeds in many cases. if you want to do away with conformation, you are basically arguing to do away with breeds. How does that explain that for over 100 years, without a written breed standard, AF Pointers and AF Eng...

Pretty easy to get a realiable recall in a couple of weeks especially with an older dog, I would refrain from running him until I had him collar conditioned with a decent recall. I have never really had a dog run off and not come back, it may take a little while for them to figure out that you are not there and to come looking for you but if you have bonded well with the dog they should come back. If you have the room strap an astro on them and let them roll.
