Re: Feet toughness?
I hunt chukar exclusively and of the 4 dogs that I own only 1 has had issues with his feet and they will look like this in a matter of hours without boots: http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q28/c_juve/th_130020.jpg I really think that it has to do with the individuals movement more than anything el...

Re: Holding point
That's what you do. These questions are hard for me because of how I train. I let pup chase birds until he figures out he can't catch them and starts pointing . It might take months. By then he's pretty staunch. I don't have to ream on the check cord or use a launcher. This is how I do it as well, ...

As I am sure I would loose on his birds.... It's about the development of the dog period.Razor wrote:I have a dog like you and I would not make the bet. I do not care what you scored in the VGP, you will lose on their birds. Phez you might have a chance.

Re: The ridiclious use of the term "close working NSTRA lines."
Tell me this, why don't people with AA dogs want to take wagers? First 3 guys back to the truck with a limit? They live in FT rules. They know their dogs won't win, so they make up reasons why their dogs are still superior. AA dogs might be great dogs, but there are many "meat" dogs that will destr...

cjuve- not necassarilly- take Rangers Barshoe Angel- might still be the winnningest female in NSTRA- she could plain out cover ground And she probably could have covered more being chased off of horseback This might come as a shock to you but not everyone owns a horse or even likes to hunt on horse...

I disagree, just strap on an Astro it will tell youI have never been one to compare one format to the other and I am not now.The only point I am making is to trial in one format versus the other, for an hour, takes just as much exertion and conditioning as the other.PERIOD

If planters are they where they should be or are they just thrown out randomly off a quad? What spicies...

Re: The ridiclious use of the term "close working NSTRA lines."
I You can twist it anyway you want Neil but bottom line an hour of running in the cover of a typical NSTRA is ZERO difference then an hour of running in the other formats in terms of conditioning and excertion. There is no twisting about it, they are different venues made to evaluate different aspe...

I recently switched my 3 yr old EP from canidae chicken and rice to Diamond naturals extreme athelete. He is doing well on the diamond i.e his coat is a lot shinier and softer. My only concern is the recalls diamond has had in the past. Just wondering what others thought about the food. After seein...

Re: Training FT versus Hunting
For my purposes no there is not much difference between the dog that I enjoy hunting behind and a dog that runs in AF trials. I like my dogs to fill up the entire country and don't really care if they retrieve, that is what retrievers are for. Nothing excites me more than watching a dog hitting objec...

I will qualify my post by saying that I have no experience with Brittany's but have with pointers. You first have fo figure out what you want out of the dog, is this dog going to be used for horseback trials, foot hunting on a preserve, hunting small tracts of land or huge open spaces IMO all that p...

Re: Attitudes High Finance as a stud dog....?
So to say Western dogs have an edge over easten dogs in Chukar terrain is not what I have seen. I believe it's conditioning to the type of terrain and birds they will be hunting. But I am talking about GSP's not pointers I agree 100% and the breed does'nt matter. Ron I agree that conditioning plays...

I have a 17 month GWP who I just finished hunting the opener of pheasant season here in Montana. Last year I hunted him at a local preserve 3 or 4 times and he did outstanding. He hunted hard, stayed close, pointed countless birds and we shot 40 or 50 birds over him. I couldn't have been more pleas...

Re: Pressuring a Pup
It would take one heck of an amount of pressure to get a good dog to shut down. In fact, it would have to border on abuse. Take a look at the NAVHDA and how young they train and learn. If you have a GOOD dog from reliable breeding, even with a lot of pressure they become bolder and bolder as they m...
