Re: COST OF TRAINING??
If you are going to trial that dog then a trainer will take it slow to keep style, etc. A dog can be broke in a couple of months, but don't expect any style or run. They're really not broke, they just have the chase taken out of them. I would bet your trainer has a big picture in mind. You should a...

Mine do the same thing when they have free access to feed, the only way that I have had them trap right away is to hold back food. I really don't care because I have enough birds to train with but if I were short on birds it would be a different story.

Personally I would not take a horse like that to a trial for a first exposure I have had dogs jump up on horses at trials. The best thing that you could probably do if you are not an experienced horseman is go get yoursef a field trial horse, one that has been there and done it before. If you do dec...

It does depend on where you live but the sun kills a lot of bacteria, you can always put up shade or the dogs can go inside but it would be wise to face it so that it does get enough sun exposure to take care of the bacteria.

The biggest thing that I would change is how I sloped the kennels. I would add a trough on the building side of the kennels and slope everything to the trough, the trough would drain to a septic system that way there would be no scooping poo and you could just wash down the kennels from the outside....

I built something like this for my quail johnny houses. You coud easily modify the front to have a vertical door, stand it on a couple 4x4's, add a pigeon door with a landing pad and be set for 10 birds. I used 2x2's with exterior siding and 1/2" hardware cloth. Takes me no more than 2 hrs to build ...

I put much more faith in application than I do speed, a dog running at breakneck speeds does little good if they always running where there are no birds or to the rear. 8-12 MPh seems to be the norm depending on terrian and conditions. Leaving the dew claws on is a very common practice for pointer breeders in the South. I cannot speak as to the issues on the East Coast or the midwest but generally speaking in the West if the weather does not cooperate then you have poor nesting success, I believe that this is the single biggest issue facing the bird populations that I hunt.

I feel closed breed trials are a good thing, there is no reason that a test should be looked down upon just because they restrict entry to other breeds as long as they are judging against the specific breed standard. I feel that it shows that the people have the betterment of their breed in mind.
