Re: GSP Producers??

Just curious, why would a 2xNFC that produces winners be bred very little?? It's easy he was not the prettiest dog in the country and with him producing Bob's Slick, which would have lost to him in a beauty contest, and there was a question on who he really was. MSR you are 100% correct you need to...

Re: GSP Producers??

Yes Slick and his prodigy have been great producers (20 dogs have 238 wins). From what Steiger has told me he was only bread some 5 or 6 times. One the the dogs he produced was Heide's Mighty Slicker, when Thompson won the Amateur at the All Breed it was one of the greatest prefomances I have ever s...

Re: GSP Producers??

The pointer world is much cleaner, there was no reason to hide who that dog is out of, even if the dog is not out of that individual it was most likely real close, and line breeding works very well when you know axactly what you have. I beleive one of the reasons that the All Age is suffering in the...

Re: GSP Producers??

In the GSP world there are tons of land mines, when you go back that far odds are that the pedigree is not correct. And the fact of the matter, a number of the dogs that are out there today would blow them away. No one seems to know if Dude is even who they say he is and pups that he was cridited fo...

Saddle had 19 placements in the AF. I probably be talking to Kevin tonight and I'll ask him, but that is about right, I am pretty sure he went over 10.

Re: to much importance put on pedigree?

Dave that was beautiful a bit long but beautiful none the less. Like I said most people do not understand breeding as a whole, and think that if you breed 2 dogs you will always get good dogs. You have to look at the entire breeding, not only what the pedigree is but also what the parents are, what ...

Re: to much importance put on pedigree?

The pedigree is a road mape unfortunately not to many people know how to read it, but without that pedigree all you are doing is taking a shot in the dark. The titles that dogs on that pedigree have won basiclly tell you what you may expect and does increase the value of that breeding. I do believe ...

Re: Force Fetch Transition to birds.

Don you just haven't done enough of the bench work. The idea is that the dog must be made to understand that it is mandatory that he put that object in his mouth, in this case he most likely thinks it's optional, go back to the bench with a dead bird and make him pick it up. Keep doing it for at lea...

Re: guns shy dog help?

It sounds like you are on your way, very well done. Start shooting the blank gun closer and closer but never untill you are sure he is casing, what that does is, he has his mind on getting that bird, not the shoot so it just becomes a no big deal. When you start using the shootgun do it the same way...

Re: guns shy dog help?

Ryan it sounds like this dog has more problems than just being gun shy. First like Sharon said SLOWDOWN you are makeing this dog nuts. It does not matter wild or pegeons the idea is to build on the what the dog loves, chasing birds! Makeing him think that the sound is just part of chaseing and that ...

Re: guns shy dog help?

Bigshooter I am happy for you but this has to do with a dog that is close to becoming gun shy, not that you got away with taking a short cut. Sadie what I was refuring to was after you get to the point of shooting over the dog. This dog ran away rather than retrieve that bird, the fear of the gun wa...

Re: guns shy dog help?

Normally that would be correct but, you all ready have a dog that is showing signs of gun shyness and none of the foundation work that should have been done missing, so you can not take a chance on getting it wrong. You will only get one shot at this if the dog does become gun shy it is almost impos...

Re: guns shy dog help?

One more thing, if your dog is a food hond, when you feed him make noise, bang pots, slam doors, stomp feet, anything that will have your dog associate pleasure and noise as good. By the way a 6 mo. old pup is way to young to shot over and all that I have written are things that should have been don...

Re: guns shy dog help?

Ryan gun shyness is a tough one to over come, but a 6 mo. old pup can be fixed. 1. Put the shotgun away start useing a black gun for now. 2. Let the dog chase the bird and fire the pop gun when the dog is some 20 to 30 yards away and away from the dog. Do this for the rest of the season or untill yo...

Re: With Holding Placements

No I didn't get it from the biscut eater I got it from the American Field. In the GSP world there are only two National Championships,(GSPCA and NGSPA) both refur to All Age the others are either open or amateur, gun dog or shooting dog. And the AKC English Pointers also run Nationals.

Re: With Holding Placements

Mike you are right I never said that a hunting dog is less of a dog than a gun dog and less than a shooting dog and less than an AA, but that all dogs are differant and do not fit all moldes. The reverse is also true that a shooting dog is better than and AA or a hunting dog is better than a gun dog...

Re: With Holding Placements

I am in the North East where I have seen a number of AKC trials changed to accomadate lesser quailty dogs, courses that you need to make a hard turn 50 yd. from the brack away, no scouting, birds planted on the hourse path, judges that have never won a broke dog stake etc. etc. etc. Dogs being used ...

Re: With Holding Placements

Heaton you are 100% correct they do need to be bird dogs first, and in the GSP world to many have consentrated on run, if you knew what I run you would know. But the idea of changing the standards is as redickuless as I have ever heard. Dogs are different some are hunting dogs, some are gun dogs, so...

Re: With Holding Placements

Mike thanks for the complament, just one more point about AA. Re: With Holding Placements

Mike I do very much agree with you on all counts but one an AA is born not made. An AA is more the mind set of the dog rather than ablity, something in that dogs head says I can not stop till I find a bird!!! It would be very diffecult to put that in a dogs head. Also a run off is a run off not an A...
