Re: Proper food amount and losing weight
Just had worm medicine and finished 2 weeks ago. Stools are good so I'm not thinking it's worms again. Does anyone here make your dog food yourself and NOT feed store bought food? We tried home cooking, but our female wouldn't eat all her veggies, so we decided to go back to a mixture. We supplemen...

Re: setter snubbing food
I have read that if you neuter him that young, you will likely end up with an oversized dog. Unless there is a medical reason that requires you to neuter him, you should wait until he is at least 12 months old. 5 cups is a lot of food and 2 hours of play each day is not "working him hard". Only 2 ho...

Re: Typical price for a good pheasant mount?
Several guys in Utah do it for under $100.
I misplaced their contact info, but they frequent the gun shows and sell mounted pheasants for $60 to $100.

Munching Birds
My 2 year old female has decided that she would rather eat the birds than bring them to me. She has not yet actually eaten one, but she is trying and munching very intently while casually heading back to me.
Any suggestions?

Re: Sportmix and Pro Pac
We tried Sportmix recently. Our male gets dry itchy skin from some brands of foods, so we were feeding them the more expensive boutique brands that were all natural and grain free. We tried Sportmix Lamb and Rice and he likes it and has not been scratching himself. Sportmix is half the price of the ...

Re: Feather haters
Our dogs went through a similar phase their first year in the field. Doves lose their feathers easily and many dogs hate them; I don't fault them for it. We were patient, enthusiastically encouraged them to fetch the bird. A few times, walked over, picked up the bird and tossed it for the dogs and t...

Right now we just push him away and tell him no but he continues to try and get closer and closer no matter what we do. That will make the problem worse. But telling time? We go out to the fields almost every day at 2 PM. My 3 dogs are sitting at the door at 2 PM.If we don't go they look at me like, " What's the matter?" That is the best way that I've ever heard it said. So, every dog has its place. If not in the field, then perhaps on somebody's sofa.
Our dogs are part of our family, if they can't or won't hunt, then they are still part of the family.

If your pup is only 6 months old, you are pushing way too hard. Multiple guns in a blind and a 6 month old pup do not mix. Same goes for the e-collar; wait until the pup is much older.

Took our 2 brits out for a little fun and play time in the desert this morning. The area is heavily hunted and they usually find a lot of wounded and recently shot, but not recovered birds. Well, the dogs took off after a rabbit and before I could recall them they were out of hearing range. Our male...

Re: can my kids "screw up" our family bird dog?
Yes and no. Depends on how you handle it. But most importantly what will happen is expect thse dogs that are allowed to get away with stuff with one person to test you a little more every now and then ,,,it is very important that you stay on top of those times that the dog tests their parameters The...

Re: How to Reel in a Runner
Teach him a "turn ' command - whistle, word . Teach it on a check cord initially. That way everytime he's going out farther then you want , you turn him . He'll pick up what you want and learn to turn himself. That's what we did. We taught them the command "This Way." and two toots on the whistle. ...

I disagree with that advice. My first female brit taught me that they can and will copy that behavior (ignoring you and going the other way). My current female, 15 months old, does what yours does and she is e-collar smart. What works for us is to immediately put on the collar or check cord at the f...

It is definitely a dominance issue. Our 15 month old female does it regularly to our sons and our 13 month old male. We just swat her butt and push her off. She really does it a lot when she is in heat.

I believe that it is possible to get a dog to range farther because when I started training Duke, he would not go 5 feet away from me in the field. The first time out, he was tripping me by riding my heels so close. I decided to just stop and stand there. Eventually, curiosity overcame fear and he s...

because steel is less dense than lead, you already get more steel pellets in any given size 1oz load as compared to the same size lead pellets in a 1 oz load.
