To me it sounds as if the younger dog is being possessive of you (rubbing your legs with its body, growling when you acknowledge him etc) from the older dog.

I just went thru the same thing with my britt she had a lump on her side, and it would go way down so I'd think ya its on the mend...but then it would get larger. The other day I gave the lump a bit of an explotory massage, since she's not really sensitive to it, then next morning it was large again...

I don't know what they do with the hens, but all the birds they release are cocks in WA

haven't seen birds missing their heads, the whole carcass will be devoured and all you see is a pile of feathers, lots and lots of piles.

While working the edges of the field I stumbled on a bird someone had shot, it was alive and squawking but couldn't flush with a broken wing. also I don't see any sign of excessive water on the nose or eye drainage

all seems normal, except her attitude and perhaps could *maybe* have a higher than normal temp.

I hunt a release site as its just a couple miles down the road, it gets a lot of pressure so we come across dead pheasent all the time. Found 3 dead yesterday. The dog just sniffs and snorts a bit around it and I say "leave it" and walk off and she's back off hunting. not sure this isn't much differ...

biggest thing I see happen with the ie "Soft Dog" is they have trhe owners coddle is scared behavior or the dog gets out of donig something with the i'm scared behavior ..thus they learn quick that acting scared gets loved on...
