Re: Sitting During FF
I have been torn to start her so early, but she is doing so well on everything else that I have asked of her. She points great on birds, is very reliable on "HERE" and "WHOA" with voice, whistle and hand signals. She learned those things with absolutely no trouble. FF is the first thing she has foug...

Re: Sitting During FF
Hey Guys,
I am just starting FF on my 7 month old Llewellin. I have been using the command " DEAD" for her to retrieve. Should I use "DEAD" for her to hold during FF or do ya'll transition that in later?

When using the e-collar to re-enforce the "here" command, do ya'll generally apply stimulation until they get to your side or just until they start heading back to you?

Won't pick up woodcock
Today, after doing some live quail work with my 12 week old llewellin setter and a buddies gsp, I tossed a frozen quail for both dogs to fetch. Both made nice retrieves. We then threw a frozen woodcock. Neither dog picked it up. I understand that this is common. How would we overcome this? Woodcock ...

Re: Crying Puppy
The pup is now 12 weeks old. She is much better. The only time she barks now is when she plays with the older dog. I figured she would grow out of it as I assume she has. She just did it for a longer peroid than any other dog I have had. The longest I had one cry was maybe 5 days, where as she did i...

I have a 10 week old Llewellin Setter that I have had for 3 weeks. We first kept her in the hiuse for 3 days than put her in a kennel at night with a 13 year old brittany. They get along. The old dog puts up with her but the pup relentlessly irritates her. In the morning about 7:00 am, the pup begin...

I bought one for my daughter this past August. We have duck hunted this past season with it and it performed flawlessly. I also think that its one of the easiest guns that I have ever taken down to clean. I give it thumbs up for the price.

I had a TC Contender with a 10" .410 / .45 barrel that I bought specifically for hunting woodcock. I used it one season and shot quit a few with it. One day it scared me. The trigger pull on the contender is about 2 1/2 - 3 lbs. I discharged it once while I was still swinging it up on a bird. Now, m...

HighCotton,
I came real close to choosing your kennel. If you would have had a litter from Twister / Katrina on the ground, I would have been all over it. Chose King Llwellins instead.

I watched it again. He teaches kennel 1st, then whoa. Now, the dogs he was teaching to kennel were 3 or 4 months at best. Show pup for a couple weeks which might put it at 18 weeks before the collar. But then he says he will have a pup at 8 or 10 weeks on a barrel to whoa, which comes after kennel. ...

After watching the George Hickox DVD " Training Pointing Dogs", I certainly like his simple approach to e-collar training. My question is - At what age should you first strap the collar on and begin to use it? I thought he said he was training his dog to whoa at 8 - 10 weeks old with the collar. Tha...

I have trained one pointing dog in my life. I still have her and she has served me well for 12 seasons now. But, she is getting old. I got a new Llewellin Setter ready to be picked up in a month. 2 of us hunted this past Nov., N. of I-70 from Russell to Wakeeney. There are plenty of WIHA. Saw most birds in that area NE of Hayes. Ran into a few quail also. This was our 1st time to Ks. We hunted WIHA exclusively and had a ball. We are going back this Thanksgiving week!

I hunted S.D. 3 years ago. Myself and 1 other guy came home with 11 after 6 days hunting. We saw a bunch but many flushed wild. I think we had 3 good solid points. We did not encounter more than 3 other hunting prties in 6 days. We did not come across any quail. There were also duck oppurtunities bu...

Re: Snipe (Woodcock hunters please look)
Most dogs will point a snipe. The problem is the same as if you did not have a dog. You are in a marsh without anything in sight higher than your knees. The snipe see you coming and often flush out of range. They are pretty easy to hit beacause there is nothing but air inbetween you and the bird. Co...

stick thumb under breastbone, pull up. I use game shears to cut the wishbone.
They really are not that tasty. I de-bone the breast halves, wrap with a small piece of bacon and shish-kabob them alternating w/ onion and green pepper.

On Wed., a nice little front came thru with highs in the 60s and lows in the low 30s. Yesterday my buddy with his GSP met up with a friend of his who also had a GSP. They had 4 points on woodcock and 3 quail flushed in the same area that we only got 2 points last weekend. Today, we tried an area tha...

Tell me about it. Normally, in this same plot we can walk about 1/2 mile and get a 3-man limit. We need cold weather and a little rain would not hurt either.

Hunted this morning from 7:45 am - 12:30 pm. Had 2 brits and a GSP on the ground in the same area we found the covey of quail in last week. We are still having temps near 80 deg (78, cloudy w/ 20 mph SE winds). No new birds. Had 2 points today and 1 kill with 3 miles on our boot soles.

A buddy and I went again yesterday (12-24-08). He has a GSP and I have a brit. We entered our plot at 12:15 pm with plans to hunt until about 2:30 pm because we both had to be at church for 4:00 pm. It was near 80 deg. We bumped one within 5 minutes. I missed and it flew into a very nasty thicket. I...

Here in La., our season opened up on Thur. the 18th. It had been near 80 deg. all week until today (52 - 35 deg.). Two buddies of mine went to 2 different spots on Fri. One had 2 points and the other had none. With this front, I was hopeful we would have more. Today I went with the guy who had the 2...

1st woodcock flush of the season!
Down here around the New Orleans area yesterday we got anywhere from 1" - 8" of some weird cold white stuff falling from the sky. We hunted NW of Great Bend from Nov. 16 - 22. Wakeeney was our home base. It seemed that north of I-70 there was still alot of standing milo and we did not do too good up there.
