Skin Rash

Every year about this time of late summer/early fall, my dogs succomb to a field rash on their bellies (exposed skin areas). Every year I bring them into the Vet, they want to put on them on an antibiotic, say its from a plant allergy and then when the antibiotic treatment doesn't work, they finally...

Re: Whoa Post Question - SCS

Thank you very much for your help! I have taken your advice this last week and really snapped her to the end of the rope for about 3 separate times, left her on the chain gang and then tried the 180 (after stimulating first, of course). She kept up the same charade, stiff, walk past the post and sti...

Whoa Post Question - SCS

So I am following the Smith's Silent Command System on Whoa Post training. The dog has been great through 4-5 weeks of phase 1 whoa posting. She fought me in the beginning then just accepted it. Now her tail is up and wagging when we are between posts and after we are done. She slams on the brakes w...

Re: Timed Feeding Once a Day or Twice?

Puppy - morning and night feed, 6am/6pm 9 months+ - one evening feed at 6pm I have 2 brits: the older 6.5 yr old gets 1 evening feed or when she succeeds in stealing food from the pup in the morning. However, the pup is about 10 months old now and I switched her over to once a day now, in the evening.

Re: Not getting my pigeons

Ha! Me and my wife went through this exact same thing this year. I bought a trap after convincing her of all the money we would save over buying them from our local club. Well, we went out and trapped from June-July and didn't catch a single one of them and there were 40-50 birds in the area (and th...

Another good dog related podcast is birddogsforever.com, they have a free podcast that I use Itunes to download and they have a premier podcast (if you donate to help keep the site running) that often finishes up a series of topics they were talking about.

Re: Tips for introducing a pup to an older dog?

Funny...I am in this situation too. I have a 6 YO Brit female that has the run of the house. I just picked up a new brit female, 8 weeks old last weekend. I went up to the breeders and picked up the pup with the older dog to see how it would go. They seemed to ingnore each other there and in the car...

*Well, I had a really long post made and then my pc went south and I lost it. Re: Last shot of the year for me in WI

I always take a trip to hunt in Dec/Jan. Your right they like to move around in the seasons. You need to find some birch/aspen with small-med size pines around. Check the bases of the trees, this is where we found them. We also "road" hunt them as well. Meaning, we drive around and try to locate the...

Maybe, you guys are losing your hearing? :D I can hear mine, especially when I hit the locate button. I actually turn mine down to help save the dogs ears. I do admit, in a good wind and with some distance on the dog, i have to turn it to max to make sure I am not missing out on the action. But most...

Re: Dogtra 2000 vs. Dogtra 2500

I have the 2502 T&B and love it. I like the fact the horn and electronics are on the same box. I also can adjust the volume of the collars within 3 levels of sound volume. They have been plenty loud for my dog running over the hill every once in a while. They also have a locate button which will max...

Re: chest protector...

I use one called a "skid plate". I have been very happy with it. My Brit is small, about 32 lbs. She doesn't even seem to know that she is wearing it. I first tried the medium size as she had a severely scratched up belly and I couldn't find a small one locally. The medium was too large and I order...

Re: What gun dog breed do you currently own and why?

Brit, because when I researched for my first dog, the description matched what we were looking for: a great versatile hunting dog, great hunting from grouse to quail to pheasant, awesome family dog, great disposition, medium size dog and can be groomed/trimmed easily.

I used to feed Purina Pro Plan but now I am feeding Native because I choose a level that coincides with the dogs activity level and its the same food so they don't need a transition period. Dogtra hands down. I have a 200NCP and now a 2502 T&B. WIth a rheostat control system and 127 levels on the 2500 (60 on the 200), you can dial in your dog exactly to its stimulation level it needs. Never had a problem with either and the 200 is 6 years old with my use and I bought it used. Still on ...

I put down 2 because we are about to get our second dog (ever) in less than a month. We have an indoor cat as well, but we didn't include her, even though she sometimes acts like a dog (i.e. laying around the house, pointing/flushing insects, etc.)

Re: What gauge do you shoot for upland birds?

My father borrowed me a 16 ga. bolt that I used when I first started hunting at the tender age of 24. I then moved on to buy myself a Winchester 1300 12 ga pump. That gun jammed up all the time and was a real pain in the butt so I saved up and bought myself a nice light Beretta White Onyx 626 O/U 20...

Wow, alot of good comments here on clicker training. I just listened to a podcast (Bird Dogs Forever) on clicker training for sporting dogs. So I have heard of it but not used it yet. Although if you go into PetSmart, thats all you seeing being used for puppies now.

Around here I see nothing but Hawks on fence posts/telephone poles. Though I also contribute the bird decline to Turkeys (too many) and Politicians (not doing enough to encourage habitat management).
