Re: Beating Parvo

Prairie Hunter, Thats what I thought too but those guys have used it and swears that it works. Pavo pretty much seems to be a death sentence so if a person cann't afford to take them to a vet it may be worth a try. Vagas, That's awsome, I'm glad to hear that "tough ol boy" pulled through and turned ...

Beating Parvo

Has anybody ever heard of giving a parvo pup bleach? My coon hunting buddies have had great success with it. Unfortunately for that to happen you would have to have parvo litters wich is a nightmare. When administering make sure that the pup is biting down on the syringe so that it gets in his stoma...

I also use a prong collar in my heel/whoa training. What I have found is that a after a couple of snaps of the collar and the dog seems to try to understand what you want due to the instant presure. If you are working with a cooperative dog you should'nt need the prong collar after minimal sessions....

Re: male or female?

I would like to clear this up. I had no agenda to debate this subject as I stated " I'm not trying to debate it, just to learn". That being said, I have no problem debating about a subject that I believe in or one that I have knowledge of. What I do have a problem with is being taken out context wic...

Re: male or female?

Shadow, That statement came after I googled it as suggested by vzkennels. That is the information I came up with. I could'nt find anything negative on spaying pups young. Apparently it is done all the time by rescue groups and animal shelters and I'm not saying it's right or wrong. I did'nt know and...

Re: male or female?

I'm at a loss of words here. First, I never stated that I was ever going to get a pup or dog spayed. I just asked a question. Second, A person should never compare a child to an animal - for example; if you do that to your dog but would you do it to your a child. I understand that horrible things ha...

Re: Concern over current dog - getting new pup

nooblet, It seems that a young dog only picks up bad habits from other dogs. You should never take him running rabbits with that pointer. I would reccomend just letting them play together in the yard but never have them in a field together. What are you planning on hunting? By the way, exactly how s...

rstbkt69, Sorry to hear about your situation and best wishes to you and your family. It sounds like the guy understands your financial situation and just wants to invite you out to his place for a free hunt. I would concider taking him up on it. Although, $200 per hunter for 10 chukar seems about 2x...

Re: male or female?

vzkennels, What I have found is that you can have a pup spayed or neutered as young as 6 to 8 weeks old with no harmful effects. Overall, younger animals recover faster with less pain. I did find that some vets prefer to wait until 16 weeks or until they are dewormed and have had they're vaccination...

Re: Close Points

BellaDad, If your 9 month old GSP is pointing birds 5 to 7 feet away in the green stuff I don't think that you have anything to worry about. The scent conditions are not the same as if hunting was in season. Now if your pup is catching birds that is a big set back (from my experience) but easily fix...

I know a guy that loves his Stoeger 2000 and he can afford to hunt with anything. It will fall in your price range and takes 3 1/2 and it's a semi auto. I personally prefer a nice sxs but good luck with your search.

JDN, You may want to concider a french brittany. I'm a pointer guy but I know where some 4 week old pups are that you could get at a reasonable price. If you are interested PM me and I will connect you with them. Either way, good luck with your search.

Cashiers, I would use a different approach than those mentioned thus far. Not that theres anything wrong with those methods. If you are 100% for sure that your dog knows what here means I would start him on the e-collar on a low setting and if needed raise it. It souds like it might be time he under...

Re: Frozen Semen Breedings Should Not Be Registered

Ezzy - What's that got to do with anything? I am very familiar with DNA. Getting back to my original statement. Frozen semen breedings go against mother nature's selective breeding process in wich through selective breeding the strongests survive, this means with birddogs that the best should be bre...

OK quail hunter, Is she still bleeding at all? If so, there's nothing to worry about right now. If you go wipe her and it is completely clear (no pink at all) her fertile window has opened. If the male is not covering her at that time then you may want to go the AI route (time to get your hands dirt...

Re: Frozen Semen Breedings Should Not Be Registered

Pointers_31, That's a tough scenario. I can admit that there are some advantages to frozen semen breedings. Another one would be when breeding to a studdog that is very far away. It would be so mush easier to just have a straw sent to your vet's office. I just forsee it being abused in the future (a...

Re: Frozen Semen Breedings Should Not Be Registered

Where would we be if birddog men were doing this 30 or 40 years ago? My guess is that we would all have sons of Elhew Strike, Millers Chief, Fiddler, Joe Shadow, ect. We would have missed out on the true greatness of these producers and the production off their offspring. Why breed to Snakefoot when...

Briarpatch, that was a very smart reply. To answer without being a hypocrite I would say outcross to a proven pruducer then go back into the original bloodline. Similar to what Mr. Whele did when outcrossing to Hook's Bounty Hunter and Dun's Fearless Bud. Jakemaster, I had no idea that Rail Dancer f...

Frozen Semen Breedings Should Not Be Registered

Am I the only guy that thinks frozen semen breedings are wrong? If a great champion cann't produce sons that produces champions then why breed back to him? When a dog dies he should stay dead and let his offspring carry on his legacy. I think frozen semen breedings only make very high priced puppys ...
