Re: Stopping pigeons
I have kept birds for years and about have it figured out now. For food, take a five gallon bucket and cut 1/2 or 2/3 off the top. Fill the bucket about an inch from the top. This will free feed 20 birds for nearly a week. They will get in the bucket to eat and wont waste much. U will have more wast...

I've been to the UP for grouse and it was pretty good, but also 21+ hours away. I can make it to PA in about 14 so was thinking of giving it a try. What do y'all think?

I have a 3 year old who is the same. She has always been hard mouthed, but at the end of this season, she completely ignored her come command and proceeded to attempt to eat the bird. UFTA
No pics, but I'm proud of my girls. We attended the Cherry Hill Pointing Dogs UFTA trial in Lavonia, GA this weekend and faired quite well. My little Setter, Pepper (11months old), took 1st in the amateur division on Saturday against 14 dogs and Lilly (2 year old GSP) took 3rd in amateur today again...

Beautiful pup. For the biting, I just shove my thumb as far back in the mouth as I can and grab the bottom jaw with my fingers till they relax. You get a few marks on your hand, but it only takes a few times.

Give it time and don't call it back to you. My setter was like that till about 5 months old and then all of the sudden one day she figured out she could run.

Thanks y'all, she gets plenty of socialization and time in the field. I will be waiting on the formal training, as she obviously isn't ready for it yet. As far as general obedience, she knows to wait at doors and for food and she comes when called. She even goes in the kenel by herself sometimes. :D

4dabirds, I have a GSP that I did train early and she was very receptive. This Setter is totally different and can take very little pressure before cowering down. Hey, I have a 10 mo old female english setter that I've had since 9 weeks old. She is as sweet as they come but insanely wild. I have only put her on birds a few times and mostly wild birds. She handled them ok, but I've been waiting on her to mature some before really working her on launchers. I be...

I am using Brenda's method on my GSP and it has taken hundreds of reps. I finally figured out that she was faking pain when I pinched her ear. After a few days of really digging in on her, she is getting much better and much faster. I would think you either need to do more reps or more pressure.

Slistoe, I am working on that as we speak. She sits calmly till I say ok and she doesn't eat till she does it. I will try this with hot dog bites, getting closer and closer to her mouth as I go. It's low pressure and if it doesn't help, there's nothing lost.

Man, it's still too hot to get out and work the pups. I sure am ready for some 60* days. My dogs won't know what to think about getting to run all day. I guess I am going to have to do some night time roading to prepare them for MI. Who all gets up early (sun rise) and works their dogs?
