Re: Close working pointing breeds

Sorry, Vman, I misinterpreted your last post. You had already clarified and now that I reread it I agree.

I must say that this is not consistent with my experience. I hunt a close working French Brittany and don't have a problem with this on wild Bobwhites.

It sounds like you are looking for a continental breed.

Re: Rizzini O/U

It sounds like you may be looking at one imported under the FAIR name. I really don't know what that exact gun is worth. You probably want to see which model it is. In the U.S., Milanos tend to run $1,000 to $1,400 and the old Veronas less. The new Veronas are more in line with the Milanos. There is...

Re: Rizzini O/U

The FAIR guns are I Rizzini. All of the Rizzinis are Italian manufacturers. Most of these guns in the US are imported under other names. For instance, several of the Verona series were FAIR made guns. These were considered to be excellent values. The Savage Milano is also made by FAIR. I have one of...

Which Rizzini are you referring to? I believe there are three different Rizzini gun makers.

Re: Flea and Tick on a budget

I found the standard wooden tooth pick broken in 1/2 makes a good stopper for unused product and keeps in the fridge.
That's a great idea. I have been having trouble keeping the Frontline between doses. I'll have to try that.

Re: Flea and Tick on a budget

Definitely stay with the Frontline or Advantix. I used to work for a vet several years ago in school and we would occasionally see dogs sick from the cheap flea and tick medicines. I've also seen one of my parents dogs get sick from a flea collar. If you want to cut the cost of Frontline or Advantix...

Re: Preserve hunts ... what's GOOD about them?

Like ezzy already mentioned, the longer season. 2.5 months just isn't enough time each year to run my dog. The preserve extends that considerably. The other big advantage is for training. You can set up a controlled situation to work with the dogs. As the handler, you know exactly where the bird is ...

I have done some stochastic analysis of the data and believe there may be some heteroschodasticity in the number of miles. Did you perform multi-variate regression analysis? Yeah Benny, this is a doggy forum. We are rednecks, Mr. FancyPants! I would recommend White's estimator to correct for the he...

Re: Mossberg Silver Reserve-any owners?

There were many known firing pin issues for awhile. I believe that is supposed to be fixed. I had a friend who received one as a gift from his brother. The safety wouldn't always disengage. It was inconsistent enough that Mossberg couldn't fix the problem and ended up sending him a new one. While th...

Re: Picking out an over/under shotgun

I actually went through the same thing myself the past year. I spent a lot of time reading about different o/u's and deciding what features I wanted. How the gun fits you is the number one thing. Besides that, I also like a light field gun. 6.5 lbs or less. On a typical hunt, I may walk five miles a...

I think you'll have a tough time finding anything but a pup for $500. The increased training with older dogs demands a premium.

Re: Good dog to start with?

Yeah, you may have to travel a little from Blue Springs to find wild birds. I'm from Columbia and often hunt wild quail on the family farm an hour away. There is a field trial near St. Louis in a few weeks that may be a good opportunity to watch some different breeds work. Here is a link to the anno...

Re: Hip going out ?

A dog can have hip dysplasia without showing signs. That's why its so important to have x-rays. While you don't need to know if the dog is fixed, it can be advantageous. If the dog has HD, you can start them on glucosamine and chondroiton now to help reduce the potential effects down the road.

Re: Hip going out ?

Would a torn ligament get progressively worse over two years? (That's not a rhetorical question). My dog has HD and he only shows pain after hunting. The pain is usually gone in less than a day and he's good to go again. Also, although he has HD in both hips, one seems to bother him much worse than ...

Re: setter, britt questions

True Jayhawk, there are examples of poor dogs in every breed so let me state that another way. Of the 25-35 Brits I've hunted with, I can say that only 3 would I have been proud to own. They were sire, dam, and offspring owned by the same gent. All of the others had major flaws (inherited or man ma...

Re: brittany and french brittany

You're correct it's not US Field Trials. It's more of FB field trials. I must admit that part of the pup's problem is that my friend needs to do some more serious training with the pup... she's a little out of control. She's a young pup and may bring her range in with time.

Re: brittany and french brittany

French Brittanies are usually marketed as a close working breed. Mine isn't usually much more than a 50 yard dog. However, I have a friend who bought one with some field trial parents and she will outrun pointers.

Re: Right/ Wrong ways to use an E collar?

While on this subject, I also have a couple of questions. There seem to be two methods, a nick to get the dog to respond and a continuous shock until the dog responds. On my e-collar I bought (but have not used yet), the booklet outlined one way and the video another. Which is preferable? Also, the ...

Thanks for the helpful replies. I hadn't thought about a few of those things. I'm also glad to hear that perhaps we can get some good years. Hip Dysplasia

I've been watching this forum for awhile and finally decided to join. Seems to be lots of useful information here. I'm on my first bird dog- a 2 year old French Brittany. We've both been learning a lot and making some real progress. However, today he was diagnosed with moderate to sever hip dysplasi...
