North Carolina Grouse Hunting

I'm not quite ready for Grouse season to end and I have been thinking about a grouse trip to North Carolina as you can hunt there until the end of February, specifically Allegheny County. Anybody grouse hunt in this vicinity this year? What kind of flush rates did you have? Trying to decide if it's ...

Re: conibear traps

I live in Ohio, but hunt a lot in PA. I am not familiar with the 5 gallon bucket or box. What is that? The conibear has to be inside a bucket to be legal you are saying? This is something that concerns me a lot. You can release these traps with a piece of rope as well. There's a bunch of you tube vi...

I was feeding Fromm's Gold up until a couple weeks ago. Making the Switch over to Dr. Tim's. We'll see how that works.

Re: Yildiz Shotguns.

I had a twelve gauge. Had problems with the second barrel from day one. My buddy got the same gun and no problems. When I contacted the company to about getting it fixed, they were completely worthless. I just got rid of it. I think it's 50/50. You may get a good one, or you may not. Other than the ...

I feed the gold. I did a lot of research, and came up with this food. I use to feed premium edge. Ingredient wise I thought it was the best bang for the buck, but diamond had to many recalls so I switched to Fromm's and have no complaints.

My dogs can't wait to drink it. They line up after a hunt waiting for me to bring it out like its a treat for a good hunt. Guess I just must have gotten lucky. I figured it tasted good the way they act.

Well, it's Thursday evening, how did it go? I was on the Elk Ridge boat in your original post, so I hope you enjoyed it. I'll be heading there Saturday morning for a hunt with my brother.

I mean probably doesn't matter who's rule it is, either way they request it. That being said if you don't carry a gun I wouldn't think you would need one, but I don't run the place.

Re: Ohio people: license question.

I don't know if you legally need one through the state or not, but I know the elk ridge website more or less says to gun te preserve you need a license. Again, I don't know if that's their rule or a state rule. In this case it probably doesn't matter.

Re: woodcock in the swamps

Every year I think about taking a December or January trip down to Louisiana for woodcock, but then I talk myself out of it because if snakes and alligators. How big of a concern is that when woodcock hunting this time of year? I wouldn't be doing any duck hunting, solely woodcock.

Using Google Earth To Identify Grouse Cover

I know a lot of people are now using google earth to do some prescouting when looking for grouse coverts. I was wondering if someone can explain to me how you do this. I did a search and found a lot of people saying things like "use google earth to identify clearcuts in your area," and other general...

The place on 534 is Right near the traffic circle in the center of Hartsgrove. It's very close to crooked creek, I'd say 5 to ten minutes. Are you a member of Crooked Creek? I've been thinking about joining. They seeem to do a decent amount of dog stuff, but I haven't spoken to any of the members.

Re: pheasant hunting on public land in Ohio

Cheryl, I've been to almost every hunting preserve from Ashtabula to Columbus. I think without a doubt Elk Ridge Game Farm is far and away the best. It's locatd in Bucyrus, about 1.5 hours away from you. It's not the cheapest place, a hunt there will cost you about 80$, but it's as close to real hun...

Follow Up to Dog Box Post

Decided to start a new post as my question was a little bit different. I'm looking to buy a dog box as well. I live in Ohio where the weather can go from below zero to 90 degree's. I'm planning on buying an insulated box, so I'm not to worried about the winter, but I was wondering if any of you use ...

Yes, I know. At first I thought that's what it was. He's been to the vet. Plus any other time we aren't hunting he runs like a complete maniac. He loves to race me on the four wheeler. He usually wins too. I've clocked him upwards of 35 mph. I don't believe it to me a health issue.

Range Question II

I'm kind of having a similar issue. I have a three year old gsp that has always been fairly long ranging, 100+yards. This year for the first time we started hunting grouse hard in the thick stuff and did a lot of it. After the first two extended grouse trips we came back to ohio and went out after p...

Re: Help!! In Northeast Ohio

I have about 20 acres in North east Ohio (Rock Creek). I am currently building a flight pen and have the necessary dog training ground permits. I hardly have what you would call large fields, etc., but in a pinch it can work for some training. If your interested in coming by let me know. You may be ...

2010 Kansas Bird Hunt

My father and I are planning a bird hunt this year to Kansas the week of thanksgiving. I"m in the initial stages of doing my research, but at this point I think we are headed to the N.W. part of the state, probably like the areas surrounding Hayes. We are looking to get a mixed bag of birds, but pro...

All, I currently have a GSP that is a year and nine months old. I am a very inexperienced dog training/bird hunter. I am having two main problems with him that I was hoping you all might be able to help me with. Problem #1- As long as the bird stays put my dog will hold is point. However, as soon as...

Hello All

Just wanted to introduce myself. I"m Nick and I live up in Cleveland Ohio (quite possibly one of the worst places to be a bird hunter in). I own a 1.9 yrs old GSP and a 10 week old beagle. I"m a long time hunter, but new to the world of gun dogs and the hunting associated with them.
