Re: National Amateur

Congrats to Pat and Tippy! I met them at the NAGDC event that they won. This might slow down the talk that a National Walking Dog Champion cannot run with the Big Boys.

Re: First Grouse over new GSP pup !!

Dave, I envy you. I have manage only two trips so far since the Woodcock season opened in NY and now it has been raining or snowing this last week. It has been over five years since I have been able to make it to Maine. Beautiful country, looks like you and you pup had a ball. Your pictures brought ...

Butterball and the gang - trip two

This year I have set a goal of getting the young dogs out hunting Woodcock as much as I can during the season. Yesterday (10/10/09) was our second trip. It had rained the night before and it was cloudy and damp into early afternoon. Unfortunately none of my hunting buddies were able to come. As a re...

Butterball's First Hunting Road Trip

Butterball (9 weeks old) got to go on her first hunting road trip with the big girls. For all our efforts I go my limit on Woodcock and my hunting buddy got a Grouse. One time during the day when I gave Butterball a pee break I threw one of the dead Woodcock into some grass. After Butterball had tak...

Re: Let's Help Rick Pick His Pup *PICTURES*

Tony, I also was poking fun at Rick. Picking an exceptional puppy is like buying a Lottery ticket. You have your favorite numbers, your rituals, you rub the lucky rabbits foot, put your money down and walk away with the ticket. However, with the puppy you love it no matter how it turns out because i...

Re: Let's Help Rick Pick His Pup *PICTURES*

We need more information to make this really interesting. I start out liking looks ( large patches, deep liver color, solid head, white background to patch area, etc.) Then, once the eyes open and the personality shows the selection changes or narrows down. Give us some information on their personal...

Re: Virginia Woodcock?

The thing to remember is that Woodcock like and eat only worms. So you need to find soil that worms thrive in (loam, flood plains with silt, etc). If soil is rocky or sandy, no worms, no Woodcock. Also, Woodcock like ground that is open and clear so they can walk around but need a canopy close above...

Re: Adult stakes FT question

I can live with that. Thanks for the quick reply. So the act of movement be it the pointing dog or backing dog is a fault which in turns detracts from (if you will) the overall score of the dogs performance. Kind of like getting one question wrong on a 100 question test. More faults (more missed que...

Re: Adult stakes FT question

While on the subject of backing… A question came up in conversation yesterday. The question was is the backing dog picked up if it turns to mark the pointing dog’s flushed bird? My initial reaction was to answer yes since the backing dog is supposed to be literally pointing the pointing dog. Since t...

Not sure my PM ever got out of the blocks so I go this rout. The slide show is great. My question was what program did you use to generate it? Also in your opinion would it ever be possible for a person who does not ride a horse to ever be able to partake in such hunting. I think I have a few dogs t...

Sorry, but now you got me off on a different tangent. Most people (me included) think that Woodcock tastes like liver. Has anyone t...

If you can find an old issue of GSP News (May 2004). David Deioma's tribute to his dog. The material was the basis for the nomination package which was used to get Trekker into the GSPCA Dog Hall of Fame

Thanks DGFavor. I suspected the solution was that way. Although I use layers a lot, I have not ventured into that particular procedure very much because it is time consuming (I thought). I was hoping that there was another way to accomplish the same thing.

I agree with Chief_dog. It is an opportunity to train and steady your dog. I have done just such a thing. However, there are times when you would just like to go out and hunt behind your own dog. Your buddy should understand. If he does not, perhaps he is not such a good buddy. It is not always abou...

IF you are a responsible breeder that has a good line and it turn out you have a carrier that has the attributes you want you can breed the carrier.
