In the past I have smoked pheasant using primarily applewood. It always comes out great.
I have a Crab Apple tree in my yard that I want to cut down. IS Crab applewood any good to use when Smoking gamebirds?

Will be making a trip out to North Dakota to hunt the prairies near Medora. Hopefully will get into some sharptails and huns.
Anyone from that area on the site that wants to get together for an afternoon feel free to PM me.

Re: Non-Traditional Hunting Dogs
I have encountered a few over the years. Growing up my friends minitature poodle would sight point squirrells. I am not talking a flash point - I mean a tail crackin, staunch point. That spurred me and my brohther to train my sisters miniature schnauzer to hunt squirrells. Once he figured out what w...

The last bag of pro plan Performance I bought had a sticky oily texture to it. It is so bad that upon touching, it will leave a sticky ily film on your hands. There are a lot of activities to get into with your dogs. Depending on what type of bird dog you get, there are all sorts of organizations that you can join to train and compete your dog, NAHVDA comes to mind. There are plenty of organizations that compete hounds, although I don'r know the names of ...

Re: Can a Flushing dog be used in Grouse woods?
Flushing breeds can be used quite successfully on Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock. Its true you have to watch, but generally a flusher gets quite animated when its on a bird. Therefore his body language should tip you off. A Cocker Spaniel name derived from hunting woodcock. I've hunted with Springers La...

My statement that I was sure that the breed had advanced is an assumption on my part that over time the breed has improved. Probaly a naive assumption on my part. The actual foundation kennel was a little farther North. I believe around Alpena. The guys name was Henry Hollyoak or something along those lines. He did pass away in the late 60's. There were quite a few people who trialed with Holly Haven dogs or dogs who had that lineage. Quite a few Brittany Fun...

Has anyone ever heard of this line of Brittanies.
They were out of Michigan a few decades ago. I was just wondering if any foundation for this line still existed.

Your right about the keeping quiet part.
I got a little stoked up and lost my composure when the dog outed the coon. For the most part I have been lucky with all my dogs when it comes to critters.
Next time I'll keep quiet and apply the juice.

GWP - Versatile Dog with the right kind of coat to hunt in Wisconsin.
Most of my hunting is done in October, November, and December, after that a couple of game farm hunts to wrap things up but the weather gets pretty cold and the dog coat is holds up well to all of it.

I have hunted and fished near Germfask back when I was in college.
Back then the grouse hunting was great. I assumed it is still pretty good based on who goes where and stories I have read.
Don't go there anymore since i live in Wisconsin, there is no need to go that far North.
