All dogs should be steady to wing shot and fall to be allowed to run. An unsteady dog is a safety hazard I was never run over by an unsteady dog, guess I was just lucky as I never used a steady dog when hunting pheasants. You may be steady at the blind to pass a test but having multiple gunners jump up out of the blind and start blazing is a whole different ball game. :wink:

I did this more or less to show that he doesn't act like a complete lunatic. And you CANNOT set up a dog for success 100% of the time IMHO, how will they know right from wrong? I actually teach steady to shot and flush before pointing comes into play always have. The happy feet starts when I come into the picture to flush the bird, IMO he is anticipating the flush and his brain starts going a 1000 MPH and so goes his feet. I will use the e-collar around birds when I have one that just loves to rip birds, I will say they must have the right temperament. I have never had one of my own rip birds over and over it is always someone elses mess :mrgreen:

What are you guys doing to get a dog calm around game? I am working with a 2 (yr) that gets happy feet, rears back, and is everything but calm around game. I have him so he is not going off chasing but needs to calm the frig down.

I believe the best and most low pressure way to achieve what you are after is with yardwork. There is pressure, but not around birds. I built that loft for my first and used wire on the floor so the droppings would hit the ground and I could just rake it out of the sand. I then moved up to a Redrose loft and am now looking to build another.

It all depends on the individual dog. My Pointer would take you for 30 minutes of white knuckled heck before getting down to a reasonable pace, my PP would be OK. I prefer a dog sled in the winter, it is much safer for all parties involved :wink:
