Re: Bird Dog Wars
All dogs should be steady to wing shot and fall to be allowed to run. An unsteady dog is a safety hazard I was never run over by an unsteady dog, guess I was just lucky as I never used a steady dog when hunting pheasants. You may be steady at the blind to pass a test but having multiple gunners jump up out of the blind and start blazing is a whole different ball game.

There is a whole gaggle of guys who run coverdog trials on wild birds. These dogs don't learn the ways of the ruffed grouse by seeding a field with pen raised quail.

There is certainly no shortage of enthusiasm with this dog and I usually only do birdwork 1-2 times a week and 2-3 other days we are training with retriever trialers. I'd try putting him on launchers; when he flags or drop's intensity, pop a bird. You can also have more than one launcher at a site, popping a second bird after a few second delay. Shoot birds over him, it builds enthusiasm and interest. Don't overdo the bird work; you'll bore him. Much of what you...

No what you are describing is delayed chase. You should collar, lead, the dog away and get his mind off of that missed bird and work off in another direction. When you get solid obedience you can give the dog a LEAVE IT and HEEL command and walk off and hunt in another direction. And did I read you ...

Good job, the energy you put out certainly carries over in your dog. We hunt as many covers in a day that time allows, none of the covers allow a 4 hour hunt let alone an 8. Sounds to me like you only collar conditioned for one command "here"? And you may not have even done that properly? If you haven't go back and collar condition properly AROUND THE HOUSE to commands the dog has been taught and knows.
