Re: Surrogator opinions
We ran a one on a farm with zero existing populations of wild pheasants and quail...although we did 2 runs of quail...we are well north of their range and did not expect them to survive beyond the year..it was an exercise for dog training. The one important commonality between pheasants and quail in...

Re: Dog-Eating Gators. Worried about a relocation to East Texas.
I would think it is less of an issue up there during hunting season. Down in South Texas...we will call it Port O'Connor South along the coast...they can be a problem year round. A neighbors lab got zapped by a 12 footer in the Victoria Barge canal a few years ago on Memorial Day. Even in January......

Re: our first baby.....
I have 4 kids under 10, and have always had adult dogs and puppies around. I am a firm believer that dogs either understand that babies/kids are little people and need to be treated delicately or they don't...and sadly it is not something you can really teach them. The only issue I have had is with ...

Re: Standing Rock Indian Reservation
Short answer you may not shoot 8 birds. Once you leave the reservation the following is enforced regardless of where you shot them..see below. I am sure someone on a reservation has tried to do the reverse, shoot birds then bring the state limit back to the reservation, but even with that you would ...

taking him on 2 hr rides when he was prone to carsickness was not the best idea....now he has a pretty strong association. find a fun destination 10- 15 minutes away for the dog...and start going there daily...once he no longer cowers at the car...start extending the trip. if you start with short tr...

Re: First night with puppy, what to expect?
Well couple of questions...I am guessing that she was put in the kennel with the food then the door closed initially ? I would guess if that happened she associates the whole feeding program with a stressful expereince. You want the dog to associate going in the kennel with something positive...in t...

Could just be the birds....and their scent. The dog could smell your scent on the birds...or there is a theory athat penned game birds smell like dead birds...too much sent..put off to many fear pheremones..and especially for versatiale dogs they get conflicted...sort of smells like a live bird they...

Re: First night with puppy, what to expect?
You said you tried treats and feeding her in there....what does that mean? It is all about consistencyy...if you are going to "try it" you have to feed her in there consitently the same way every meal...no exceptions. Also, do not let her come out of the crate unless you call her...and again be cons...

Re: First night with puppy, what to expect?
It had been 7 years since 4 kids since we had a puppy...i forgot what it was like until 3 weeks ago when our new setter came home. If the pup is being shipped to you by air or traveling long distances...anything particularly stressful...I would spend the first night with the dog...after that it goes...

Re: Garmin Lesson #1
Important lesson I learned...make sure to set up the unique frequency for your dog collar, and the security features that do not allow others to track your dog with their GPS. I figured I was only running one dog..why bother...I don't field trial...why bother? Well I am on vacation in Downeast Maine...

As mentioned previously...socialization is only possible withing the first few weeks of life...and is one of the primary reasons you do not remove a puppy from the litter before 8 weeks or so. Past that point you are SOL in the socialization department. Beyond that point it is technically habituatio...

Other than the temperature blackouts for airlines...under 20 degrees or over 80 degrees....I could not imagine why you would not use air shipments...even the most expensive of the airlines, Continental...which charges by the pound, not a flat fee...is only a few dollars more than a 5 day long ground...

RGD...does Fireside have some Pinecoble in its foundation line? I was curious as one of the studs I just looked at for Taylor was from Pinecoble, that also had a high tail point...I have no preference on tail position just curious. Be very careful when looking at lines...particularly if they are from Minnesota and Wisconsin, and what lines were brought there from Europe. Some lines to the upper midwest were from bree...

How about this meat pole if you don't think are a bunch of coyotes as big as wolves around the northeast. These were shot in coastal maine by Peter Howland who also happens to be a bear/bird guide...but loves to shoot yotes. He stacks them up like that pretty frequently.

Are you looking to stay at a lodge...or a do it yourself affair...any of the old line names of lodges are great as in the Weatherby's, Libby..Grant...etc...but that will not keep costs down by any stretch. Re: DeCoverly English Setters??
As an owner of a DeCoverly Setter I can address a few of these issues. I would say some previous posts are correct in that they are bred, and bred well for a specific use...which would be Northeastern/Appalachian/Upper Midwest grouse dogs. If that is what you want to do they are the perfect dog...an...
