I sometimes do this for my pups. I use about a teaspoon or so ( never measured ). Just enough to give it a little flavor & moisture. I haven't seen any adverse effects, yet.

My father-in-law and his (late) buddy used to do this. My FIL had a Brit, & his buddy was a registered (?) falconer.
I don't know much about it myself, but as I understand it, this is how the Magyars (Hungarians) used to use their Vizslas before gunpowder.

Try burying chicken wire (or some other type of wire mesh) in her favorite spots, an inch or so below the surface. She'll get the idea quick enough, & will only do as much damage to herself as she can stand, which won't be much.

I just took Zoomie out to the woods, & its about 8 degrees out... When we were done, there was pink ice stuck to the backs of his legs from his poor "boys".
I've heard that one can put vaseline on a dog's genitalia to protect them from abrasions. Does this really work, & does it help with the cold?
