AKC is the largest registry so that's probably where most people will look for the titles on the pedigree. My preference is a FC and/or AFC MH titled dog. A dual is nice but it seems most of us are limited in time and funds as to which venues we enjoy. For me it's field games and hunting. Now I will...

Greg Sounds like Gunner had a good spring. Hope you had a good time at the trial, glad you met up with some good people. I kinda like most of them too. Weather must have been brutal on dogs and people over 4 days though. I think we're having the Fall Trial out there too, maybe I can catch you at tha...

I never have had any dogs with Dennis, but any dealings I have ever had with him have been top notch. I would say the strength of Dennis's program, besides his ability as a trainer, is his communications skills with the owners. He really involves me each week. Thats good to hear about the communicat...

Good point. I have always found it puzzling that around here most dogs entered in all-age stakes are also entered in gundog stakes. Not saying a dog sometimes can't do a good job at either depending on how they do on a given day, but when 95% of dogs entered in all-age are entered in gundog, that te...

As for people dipping their toes into other venues, I'm all for that too. What I do get frustrated with, though, is when people claim that a dog has all this field ability, for breeding sake, based upon nothing more than a JH title. In my eyes, and for what I want, it takes more than a JH title. Bi...

I attended a hunt test recently for a JH leg, and my dog did not receive a score for bird finding or pointing. My dog pointed once on a bird, she gave chase, bird flushed, I fired pistol, dog caught bird and promptly retrieved to hand. Dog kept running and retrieved a VERY dead bird to hand. I aske...

Train for master to test for Senior is the only way to go. Anyone that trains for SH will not have good results. You see this as a judge over and over. Training for MH and running senior is very helpful with most dogs as you can talk them through bad situations that you couldn't in Master. It's also...

The handler might have been friends with the judge but more than likely it was a poor judge that passes just about anything. It is generally much easier to pass a HT now than it was 10 years ago, especially in the MH level. As a handler it's a good problem to have but as a person that looks at the b...

Greg If time is short and your dog doesn't have bird work, it's a good idea to ask the judges if you can go look for a bird. Shouldn't a hunting dog be looking for birds just about the whole time they are on the ground? I know what you mean though. I wanted to let you know I scratched my entries for...

John This last walking field trial we made contact with a guy in ND that has ample land available for a trial. He and the neighboring towns would love to have 1-2 weeks of field trialing in the area. Dan E spent some time talking with him about the logistics. I am on a self imposed 2 yr sabitacal fr...

Just a bit of caution regarding this type of arrangement. I know that this type of thing isn't uncommon and works in most cases. But there is always that trainer that will put more time into the dogs of his "cash paying" clients. That attitude isn't correct but may occur. This happened to a friend o...

The idea of having two clubs giving tests on the same day in the same area is intriguing as it might give people more oppurtunity to test dogs.
