Re: Helping the girl shoot? advice?

I hope you don't mind a different viewpoint based on cynicism! Your new girlfriend doesn't want to learn how to shoot because she believes she will enjoy it. She wants to keep an eye on you to make sure that you are actually hunting rather than chasing other girls. It has been my experience that al...

Re: Helping the girl shoot? advice?

Before I give any expert opinion or give any professional advice,,, was wondering if you could post some pics of the girlfriend? :D HAHA, as much as I would like to show her off...I don't think she would be too thrilled. Maybe when I get my pup, I can sneak a in a pic with her in it  That doe...

Re: Anyone on here have a Braque Francais...or hunted by one?

I had to google it to figure out what one was. They look an awful lot like GSPs in my opinion, and sound pretty similar in temperament, hunting style, etc. Pardon my ignorance, but how are the two different exactly? It is definitely not ignorance as they look similar and are a pretty rare breed at ...

Re: Helping the girl shoot? advice?

Thank you everyone for your great ideas. It would have taken me awhile to put that all together if ever and I am sure at that point she would be frustrated. It really means a lot, thanks! I will start a new thread and give you the results when I get back to shooting again. Still a little cold up here.

Re: Anyone on here have a Braque Francais...or hunted by one?

That is actually where I am getting mine. My step-dad's dog is from Jersey Sporting Dogs and I couldn't be more impressed. I just wanted to see where others got theirs from.

Anyone on here have a Braque Francais...or hunted by one?

I am just curious...I am very fond of the breed and have not heard anyone speak of them on here besides me. I am very fond of other breeds as well but just wanted to see...If you own one, where did you get it?

Re: Helping the girl shoot? advice?

Ohh, I almost forgot....my wife actually kicked my butt in a skeet event a few years later. Maybe I didn;t mention that on purpose  HAHA! That is a good idea, maybe starting her out on the 12 gauge was a little much. I have a ruger 10 22, maybe I will have her just get used to the gun and sho...

Re: English pointer puppy. help please.

I wasn't trying to sound over dramatic. I was just trying to make the point that the dogs obviously slip on the wood floors. They have no traction and I think it is pretty obvious that it causes stress on their joints. I have seen what it specifically has done in our case, not that it will happen to...

side by side...what brand/model do you shoot?

I am sure this has been touched on many times but I will ask it again. Sometime in the future I would like to purchase a 20 gauge side by side. I want one that balances well and is lite to carry in the field/woods...I also want one that is going to last a lifetime but also one that I don't mind look...

Re: Male vs Female...performance?

Bothe dogs loved to hunt, but the younger dog who was neutered later had a ton more drive.
Any difference in behavior or personality?

Helping the girl shoot? advice?

I know traditionally hunting can mean many things to different people and to some guys it is a way to get away from their female counterparts. However, I feel different and I would really like to get my girlfriend into the sport. She has shown some interest...especially in the dog part  . I ha...

Re: New Pup!

Thank you for all the info, I am definitely intrigued by the breed. I also love to grouse/woodcock hunt although mostly grouse. I too enjoy a dog that stays close and is smaller in stature. That is why I am so into the braque francais, as they are smaller and also more docile in the household. I am ...

Re: Male vs Female...performance?

SUMMARY An objective reading of the veterinary medical literature reveals a complex situation with respect to the longterm health risks and benefits associated with spay/neuter in dogs. The evidence shows that spay/neuter correlates with both positive AND adverse health effects in dogs. It also sug...

Re: Male vs Female...performance?

I am getting the feeling I started a hostile thread...my apologies. It would be nice to get some factual base behind this or maybe a survey. It seems like opinions are just going every which way. I am going to try and take a deeper look into factual results. In the meantime if you are interested, ta...

Re: Male vs Female...performance?

Fixing a male dog early will certainly affect their personality and their growth, but not in any way that will affect their performance as a hunting dog.
In what fashion do you think it will affect their personality...just curious. I have ideas but I just want to see what others say.

Re: Male vs Female...performance?

I think it will affect their performance, and not just on physical stand point. Probably even their drive to. I am sure there is a dog or 2 out there that was neutered at 6 months and was the best hunting dog that guy/gal ever had. JMO, I am not a vet. I am a little confused. Are you saying it will...

Re: Male vs Female...performance?

Wow, I can't rag on my step-dad anymore then I guess. I was just talking to my hunting buddy, and he said he likes to let his females go as long as possible but he doesn't let them reach their first heat. He said he just feels this helps diminish their drive to breed. I don't know if that is true or...

Re: English pointer puppy. help please.

We have hardwood floors throughout our whole house. Even after adding area rugs throughout the house, one of our dogs developed bad knee joints in both rear legs. We had to have surgery because she would struggle to get up and she was only two. It is very important to provide surface where the dog i...

Re: Male vs Female...performance?

In regards to hunting performance the answer to your questions would be No and No. :P I guess I should have expected that. That is what I thought. I guess I was just curious why some prefer one to the other. Although I really didn't know if the age of getting a male dog fixed affects their growth/p...

Male vs Female...performance?

So I have had female dogs my whole life except for my step-dad's hunting dog. I am currently waiting for a new male braque francais pup. I just picked a male because I wanted to change it up. Has anyone noticed any performance difference between a male and a female hunting dog? Also I know my step-d...

Training for a new hunting pup? Braque Francais.

I am waiting for a new pup as I stated in a previous post. I am looking for the best way to train a new hunting pup. One of my hunting buddies has GSH and swears by his trainer (where he drops the pup off for a month and a trainer tries to instill the basics). Honestly I do not want to do that. I wa...

I am on a one to two year waiting list. I should have stated that. The breeders only have litters twice a year between three or four females. There was a rather substantial waiting list. Although I am now #14 on the list.

Waiting for a new pup...Can't stand the wait!

I will soon be graduating from college and I have been waiting for this so that I could finally get my own hunting companion. About two months ago I put down a deposit for a Braque Francais puppy. I grew up with one and it is just a privilege to hunt beside one of these dogs. The problem is I have t...
