Re: GSP puppy
I accept puppies as early as fourteen weeks, and sometimes as early as twelve weeks. By far the biggest issue most bring into the program is poor canine socialization. It is amazing the number of young puppies see that need a week just to learn how to play with other young dogs. Good puppy programs,...

You have described an unpredictable dog, and it is a long way from being the type of dog you would like it to be. It could be environmentally created, but if so, its much more complex than the fault of your roommate or the lack of rules at your parents home, and you need to scrutinize what went wron...

I don't hunt that way much anymore, but I use to find birds around Whig Meadows. You can get there off the Cherahala. It borders NC, so no where you are or be sure to have a NC license.

Dogs deal with the cold much better than heat. As long as they have dry bedding in the trailer, they will be fine. If it's cold enough for you to need to worry, it's doubtful you will be out anyway.

If you think taking your dog on a ten mile walk gets your dog into top shape, you don't have a clue of what a conditioned dog is capable of doing..., not a clue. The reason the top field trial players feed PPP is that it is cost effective and it delivers their required nutritional needs. I fed six d...

It is a fascinating topic, and would like to read the studies you are referencing. But, for the average hunter with an averagely conditioned dog going on an extended hunt, a products like Glycocharge will facilitate his dog and hunting experience.

The fat fuel and glycogen fuel sources do not operate exclusively of each other, and the condition of the dog determines how they metabolize fuel sources. The glycogen tank is small with a valve that opens easy. The fat tank is larger, but not as easy to open the valve for most dogs. As the level of...

Ezzy is right, Glycocharge and similar products do not give a boost, the enhance recovery. It must be given immediately after exercise ceases, after about 15 minutes, you might as well pour it on the ground. If you only hunt for two or three days at a stretch, you will not notice the benefits (altho...

I have a Wings Works that I like for training, guiding, or when on a long hunt from the truck. It's great if you need to carry a lot of weight. I suppose 'program' isn't the correct terminology. I don't want to speak for Neil, but by program, I think he meant that the stick has many uses throughout the training process. Fear and intimidation is brought into the process by man, not the tool or method. The Buddy Stick, or if you prefer, the S...

Like any tool, you need to learn how to use it. As Neil said, it is a complete program in itself, and in good hands it's like a magic wand.
If I could on have one tool to train with, it would be the Buddy Stick.

Mountaineer brings up a very good point on the vet records and veterinarians. You really need to be certain what the vet hours are, if a veterinarian is there during those hours. And if you have to go to one call ahead to confirm one is at the clinic and advise them of the problem. If it's a serious...

I have to agree with Pato on the Maine hunting boots from Bean. No support in the arch, and with the high heel and poor ankle support, even when I was in the best of shape I found them dangerous. They may wear them in Portland, but otherwise I haven't seen a rural Mainer with a pair.

I came up to Maine a little over two weeks ago. The bird numbers are good, but with the heat wave, it's been tough on the dogs to find them. Plenty of sign on the ground and the dogs get birdy, but the birds usually best them.
Looking forward to the heat to break in the next few days.

CJ, that's because you are doing it right, and you also have a long history of working with field dogs. It's not that teaching sit is the problem, it's how it's taught. An example is a dog walks up to the owner and it sits, then immediately gets a rewards, either a treat, or a pat on the head. Now t...

It's not an urban legend, nor a black and white issue, and I have never met an old time trainer worth his salt brush off the importance of obedience. If a well rounded training program is employed, teaching sit out of the box wouldn't be a problem. Enough do not employ a well rounded program, or for...

Teaching Sit to Pointing Breeds
Most teach sit better than any other command, and many teach it without even knowing it. Not all, but dogs that have a lot of heel-sit training can be a trainers nightmare. Sit is general taught by a tug on the collar standing beside the dog, putting the dog in a situation very similar to steadiness...

Regardless of the method, nothing good comes from finishing a dog to young. 'To young is essentially up to the owner or trainer to decide. Telemetry, and GPS technology make it pretty easy to tell us what a dog is doing these days, and for some, part of the thrill is the hunt to find a dog on point without using technology.
