if you are planning to use your dog for deer too, get something that can track blood. if you are not interested in pudelpointers I'd suggest looking at DDs.

Re: What kind of dog should i get?
You live in Michigan, it can be cold. Get a pudelpointer. They are outstnding pointers and great duck dogs. They are also awesome in the house. I have a 7 month old son and she is really gentle with him. I will say, they mature late so she is just now acting like a dog. My dog is 2, she is steady to...

Re: Puppy has PARVOVIRUS HELP!!
When my pup got it she was 4 months old. She had both of her shots for Parvo but apparently there are strains now that can get around it (there's also an argument that it takes until the pup is 6 months old for the vaccines to truely take effect - that's why that whole "6 month" window thing exists)...

Socialize very carefully (or, in my opinion, not at all) at this age. My pup got parvo at 5 months - d4mn near killed her. $10,000.00 vet bill. No joke. Its not worth it. Play with the dog, love on the dog, teach it where to poop and where to eat. I'd say that's enough for the first 6 months... Then...

Neil, I think that question was for me - but not sure. To be clear, I only used launchers for stop to flush training. That's it. After that it was all birds that were on the ground (perhaps feet tied - but still on the ground). My dog was steady to wing, shot and kill (broke not perfect) in about 8 ...

Re: holding point/ranging
Personally, I think it's a crap shoot. If you pop a bird every time the dog moves, it will inhibit the dog's ability to manage a moving bird (which they are most of the time) - just like whoa training. My dog will lock up, say, 3 or fout times on a bird as it is moving until she actually gets the bi...

Agreed. Get a new buddy. Hunting is a lot like golf, you can tell a lot about someone after just one round of golf and lord konws you're not there to be all pissed off. It's part of hunting wild pheasants. They do not react like pet-n-shoot birds. Remember, they are hunted often by yotes. So a dog r...

I think there are great uses for having the trailing dog retrieve some birds. Frist, it reminds the pointing dog that it does not get all retrieves. Why is that important? Right, I just use a full choke. That seems to pattern well at about 40 yards - but again, that's with actual turkey loads. I mean, I'm really tempted to just use 2 3/4 6s but I dont want to go to light. Lord knows those birds are tough. I jsut dont have the dough to spend on high quality turkey loads.

I agree. Get on wild birds. The birds will train the dogs. Your dog gets up on those pen raised birds because it can. If you think about it, getting your dog to point on "first scent" takes away what the dog does best and what you have the dog for - managing the bird. It must learn to manage and wil...
