Re: 28 Gauge O/U
I can't help you with a recommendation...but I do have two 28s. One is an OU, a Beretta Silver Pidgeon Grade III, but it costs a little more than you're willing to spend. I also own a Remington 870 Wingmaster in a 28 ga, but it obviously only has a single barrel. However, I love both guns. I've kill...

Re: Kent shot-shells any good?
Jim, That's truly too bad they don't pattern well for you. I am very happy with the pattern through several different guns, especially with the IC choke. You have a good point, though, that the original poster of this topic should consider...these shells could pattern beautifully through his gun, or...

Re: Kent shot-shells any good?
I don't understand that last comment...I've got great patterns with four different 12 ga's with the Kent Fasteel loads.
For $120 or so a case, I'll keep buying and effectively using them.

Re: Kent shot-shells any good?
All I've used for years for all my duck and pheasant hunting are Kent Fasteel 3 inch, 1 1/4 ounces of #4s, at 1425 fps. Great load, great shells. I've been through many cases of them.
Inexpensive, too, compared to other non-toxic loads.

In a related topic, can anyone recommend a guide for quail in Arizona that they've hunted with before? Hunting quail in Arizona has been something that I would like to experience, but it is a long way from Iowa to start out hunting cold. Hiring a guide could help, if I find the right fellow. The roadside counts, which can be found on the Iowa DNR website, tell the story. West of I-35 and north of I-80...its no secret.

Re: 2009 Pheasant hunting
I wouldn't claim that NW Iowa is "excellent," but my standards are pretty high...however, it can be quite good. It certianly helps that I live in the heart of it and can keep an eye on things year-round...its difficult to go into an area cold and hammer them day after day. I've put in my dues here.....

Re: 2009 Pheasant hunting
I am Iowa born and raised, and I live here still, so I know this for a certainty...most of Iowa is devoid of pheasants and habitat. I live in the NW part of the state, where there are ample pubic hunting grounds and good pheasant numbers. Oddly enough, last year was my best ever...I shot over 50 roo...

Shadow, what are you inferring? That you can actually break wings and/or legs without hitting the body? Ever patterned a shotgun before? All those little holes on the paper are where a bb of shot went through, right? So where do you throw that pattern to intentionally only break wings or legs? marsh...

Re: 20ga. or 28ga. ?
I don't think you could go wrong with either. I don't think the recoil from most 20 gauges would bother most 14 year olds, but if you are truly worried about recoil, the 28 may be better. Ammo, as has been covered previously, will be cheaper and more available in the 20 gauge. Lots more non-toxic op...

BellaDad, For the time of the season that you are referring to in the great state of Missouri, I personally don't think you can buy waders that are too warm. Re: Duck decoys - ratio question
Some would say that early in the season, like mid-September through mid-October, place more hens than drakes because the drakes will not be in their nuptial plumage quite yet, then later in the season move to a 1:1 ratio. Some even advocate to use decoys painted flat black later in the year, since a...

I'm not sure if this will be much help to you, since even the same make and model of gun could throw different patterns with the same choke and load, but for me combining an IC choke with 3 inch Kent Fasteel, 1 and 1/4 ounces of #4s at 1425 fps, throws a beautiful pattern. Maybe you just need to spend a little time at the patterning board? If it fits you, maybe the load/choke combo you are shooting doesn't throw a good pattern. You are correct, my waterfowl shots are close...35 yards would be a long shot.
I remember the old steel vs lead comparison (drop two sizes down for steel), but I thought I had read something similar for HeviShot...maybe I remember incorrectly.
