Re: Some People. ..

He had no right to ruin your hunt, that is inexcusable. HOWEVER, you chose him to hunt with and have to remember this is a sport not a life or death situation. He probably doesn't take it a serious as you, probably had a good time and is still wondering his hunting partner was so up tight.

Re: The Spaniel Spot

My Boykin SHR Seven Gables Swamp Navigator UN is 5 years old now. It's been a fun trip but way different than training a lab. He's great for what I do, a lot of dove hunting and duck hunting in swamps. He's also become a deadly little flush dog on WC (now that he's steady.) As far as effective, they ...

Re: Need some training advice for spaniel..

Goat, problem is, for a dog "trained in basic retriever work," sit means sit - whether it's hupping to a flush, or sitting to a whistle when running a blind retrieve. Sit is the first command a pup learns - when it's applied to a retrieving spaniel such as a Boykin, it should also mean "Hup" for st...

Need some training advice for spaniel..

I've got a Boykin, 17 months old, trained in basic retriever work. He's steady, picked up about 200 birds (dove, pigeons, quail and woodducks) and I've been working on his flushing. I have 12 quail that I can set out and get him to flush. I don't think he will sit to flush, yet and was wondering if ...

Training a spaniel to flush...

I have a 1yo Boykin that I have been dove hunting this year. I consider it good for him to run down a cripple dove that he flushes on a retrieve. Will this make it harder to break him to sit on the flush for quail and woodcock? Will he figure out the difference?

Re: Intro to birds...

Thanks, I think? I understand what your saying, just didn't have access to birds. He's going to turn out fine.
I was just hoping for some ideas(other than using a time machine).

Re: Intro to birds...

Thanks for the reply! I'm planning on working on the retrieve with the birds. I'm kind of paranoid about just throwing them out , shooting and letting him retrieve. The other Boykin I have is hard on doves and kills pigeons. I quess what I'm asking is there a better way to introduce him to the birds...

Intro to birds...

I have a 10 MO Boykin that is INSANE for birds. He will chase birds, bees, helicopters and buzzards. He will be 90% retriever and 10% flush dog. He is ready to hunt other than introducing him to birds. The timing (age vs seasons) and since he is so birdy I have held off on getting him on birds. He h...

Re: Dog killing cripples....

I've been using force (ear pinch) for 10 days twice a day. I have to use force every time and she is just opening her mouth with me still having to put the dummy in. She is not bugging, or showing any signs of cowering, in fact she seems kind of upbeat. I feel like I am forcing her to open her mouth...

Re: Dog killing cripples....

I don't think she has had any bad experiences w/ pigeons. I've used frozen pigeons but that seems like it would cause more problems by not showing if she's being rough on them. My dogs never chew on the birds but if I wound one they will run out and grab it and bite down until the bird ceases to mov...

Re: Dog killing cripples....

She has a sloppy mouth and is very timid, she hasn't picked up any cripples just dead birds.
I was trying to build up her drive by letting her chase some clipped wing pigeons.

Dog killing cripples....

I have a 2 YO Boykin Spaniel that I have been training. She is mainly a retriever and has picked up maybe 50 birds?? My problem is, when working with clipped wing pigeons she kills 'em. She's not trying to eat or chew 'em up she just kills 'em. She's rough on a dove, too. Will this turn into a major...
