Re: pup's leaving the litter

With our sleddogs we seldom sold them before they were at least a year and well on their way to becoming well trained dogs. While I agree that 8-10 weeks is a great time to get a dog, socialization can't stop there. Important dates in a pups life are also at 4 months and 8 months. I don't know why t...

Re: pup's leaving the litter

A pup is usually weaned at 5 or 6 weeks depending on the mother and what she wants. While I have gotten pups as early as 6 weeks without any long lasting problems I think there would be less stress on the pups if they were given a bit more time to adjust before leaving their littermates. 8-weeks is ...

8 weeks would be better, but maybe not with this breeder. Actually I'd be somewhat concerned getting a dog from someone that wanted them gone that early. Let the pup be a pup. Then get the perfect start DVD when your interested in directing it's training more. You'll have a nice working dog in short...

When we first had our sled dogs we we made un insulated houses for them and gave them straw for warmth. We had to clean the straw out several times a year. Haven't done prudoe bay. That would be a trek. Right now we're waiting for the snow to push them down the mountain, but the snow is slow in coming. Even then it's a two hour hike up the mountain to get to them. Keeps us all in shape if nothing else.

I just know that if I had to depend on wild birds for training my dog would not get trained. I would love to have more wild bird exposure, but they're hard to come by despite the miles we've put into looking. As for the dogs, the could care less what type of bird it is as long as it's a bird.

Musher here...we like to feed as close to 24 hours before a race as possible. Dogs run best on an empty stomach. Now we do hydrate the dogs the morning of the run. Baited water to make sure they drink. Hydrate when they finish the run with some glyco charge and feed a couple hours later. Hydrate one...

How do your dogs handle booties in the heat. We booted our sleddogs with booties, much lighter than these, but at 30 degrees having boots on them really slowed them down and made them look like they were struggling. I'm just wondering if you notice a change in the dogs performance by adding boots.

Yard work for me takes place anyplace but the field. I like to separate the two. For yard work I use the yard, the road, the empty lot, the creek, the cabin on the lake, the neighbors yard, even the living room if the weather is bad. I do some sort of yard work every day.
