I was going to suggest that. No reason you cant hunt together and enjoy each other's company. Just tell him you would like to hunt your dogs separately since your dog is just a pup and very inexperienced. My dog is 7 months and works well by herself but when there is another dog on the ground all sh...

I found him. Thanks guys. I got a hold of red earth outfitters yesterday and he was very helpful. Said I could come out when this cold weather passed and he would show me how he starts woah breaking so she has to spend less time with at the trainer and thus costing me less money. Which was awfully n...

You said you are wanting to hunt quail and because of that you really need something that doesnt hunt real close. Here in Oklahoma the places you find quail are out in the grasslands and for that you need a dog that will run a few hundred yards out. If you are wanting to watch trials, you might chec...

Anyone know of any good trainers in Oklahoma?

I have a 7 month old German Shorthair I am looking at sending to a trainer to have finished. She is obeying basic commands and hunting and pointing and has natural retrieving instinct so If I can get her steady on point and woah I am just looking for someone to finish her from there. Any info?

Its really about personal preference. I had to wrestle with the same dilema you are right now when I considered buyin a German Shorthair. There is really no saving money by not buying the finished dog because if you truly want a finished dog you will likely have to send it to a trainer anyways. For ...

You got that right. If I ever move anywhere, I will take a serious look at the upland hunting before I pack one box. No hunting means no move.

I live in Oklahoma and like I said I am really hoping the quail numbers make a comeback. I am hopefully confident that they will. Of the places you mentioned so far I think Nebraska would be your best option because you could also go to south dakota fairly easily. However, I plan on running my dog o...

It all depends on what you want to hunt. Nebraska would be good for pheasants and some quail, you could also hunt Kansas for good numbers of pheasants and quail. Oklahomas quail numbers have been going down but show a slight increase this year so I am hoping and thinking they should be up higher nex...

Keeping my girl safe while in heat.

I was wondering if some of you guys might be able to give me some advice on this. II have a 7 month old GSP female that I imagine will be coming into her first heat pretty soon. I have her in a 6 foot high kennel with the gate having a lock on it and I am not wanting to spay her until she is fully m...

I think 3 months i way too early. Like someone else said, the dog is too young to know hat is goig on. I will say that I think everyone should test the collar on themselves before strapping it on the dog. I did that and my realitively independent 7 month old GSP usually only needs a slight nick with...

you might try working with him on a freshly killed bird with a spike harness around it to teach him to chomp down just hard enough to carry it.

Thanks for a great post Hey guys I just finished my second session with her on this and thoght I would give an update. I worked with her the day before and got her heeling and woahing on a slip lead with the methods described here. I continued the lesson tody by applying pressure from the lead every...

This is an interesting problem I would think you might run into. Has anyone had thisproblem using that method or were you just able to get the dog to woah no matter where he was in correlation to you? Is the reason the dog does not have this problem is because the only command he understands to mean...

Im definately not rushing her. I wont even be able to get her on birds again for another month or so. Therefore I am taking this opportunity to continue to reinforce her obedience commands and introduce a new one or two. You are right she is a very quick learner, and because of some great advice and...

Thanks. Obviously all dogs are different but just curious if you had a rough timeline or something as far as how long it generally takes a dog to learn and start getting steady on woah. Like most people I intend to use Woah as a dual purpose command. Obviously for the obedience but if I can teach to...

I have only worked her in the yard on woah. Everything I wrote there is in the yard. I am very cautious about doing anything to discourage her when she is around birds. I agree with you that she needs to have it down in the yard before enforcing it in the field. She is very solid on the barrel, and ...

New here. advice on training woah?

Hey all. I am new here and so very glad I found this place. I am in the process of training my first dog. She is a 7 month old German Shorthair and coming along great. She is pointing birds and holding for a little while and moving along much faster than I anticipated so I figured I should go ahead ...
