Re: Transitioning Training
Every single time you attempt to recall him (a known command) and you have no means of enforcing the command with either a check cord or a collar. You are not training him to come, you are effectively doing the exact opposite. He is learning he can hunt and listen on his terms and not yours, or wors...

Re: Westminster kennel club
I think dogs are made in the field and not the show ring. There is a large conformation difference in breeds across North America simply because of the type of hunting required from the dog. A dog that needs to hunt the dense wood of Rhode Island is different than one that needs to hunt the chukar ...

Re: 11 month old gsp dropping tail on point
I've also noticed the check cord seems to bother him so maybe moving to the collar would be better? As cj shared, you and the dog have your wires crossed. What you feel is pressure, and what the dog feels as pressure are two very different things. The dog is obviously feeling a lot of it, if he is ...

I had fed Purina Pro Plan for many many years without issue and good results, never felt a need to change. Although the increase in price is unwelcome, it has had an affect on all manufactures. I am not sure what happened, but I recently had to toss two bags that neither of my dogs could tolerate. I...

Well it was going well. Then he some how hit it just right and re-injured the tail. It became much worse and infected. Tried our best, but going to have to amputate a portion of it. Really stinks!

How old is the dog? Doing it while hunting, in training situations, or both? Are you using the same field repeatedly? Working with planted birds or wild birds? Have you done a lot of whoa or standing work recently? Unproductive points out of the blue, or sticking and creeping? There are a lot of thi...

Update: Well it’s looking better every day. Tails are notoriously difficult to immobilize, but luckily it was near the end and I found a product that helped tremendously for where the fracture was located. It utilizes a braided material that acts similar to a child’s finger handcuff. I snuggly vet w...

Always something, but that’s what we are here for! I noticed this morning when he went to lift a leg, he straightened out his tail and it looked completely normal. Keeping my fingers crossed. The break was center of the bone and no damage to the joint, so maybe, just maybe, we might come out of this...

Bummer….Broken Tail
Came home on Monday and when coming through the garage door to the house, my setter got his trail caught in the door. He yelped, but a few minutes later he showed no sign of discomfort and all looked normal for the rest of the week. When I let him out of his crate this morning, it was curled down an...

Your pup is just a baby, it did exactly what good pups do. Does it come from hunting lines? Does it like birds? I imagine the answer is yes, so stop worrying. You have many, many months before this question could possibly become a concern, and honestly, it rarely if ever is warranted. The dog will p...

Being from Canada I sure won't be any help on this one. I know I could look it up, if the laws are half as convoluted as ours I probably wouldn’t understand any of it. Caught another weather window today, after last night’s storm and was able to get out and work a new area. Atmospheric River Woes
Turns out back to back to back atmospheric rivers are not conducive to late season bird hunting. We had to cancel the annual late season chukar rendezvous in Nevada due to heavy snow. So, I booked a local cabin near some of my favorite spots for the week with the family with the hopes of getting out...

I bought one about a season or two before covid. I linked it to my Alpha 100 and it was much easier to check than my Alpha. I bought a Garmin Instinct watch over a year ago mainly for mountain biking and exercise tracking. I saw that it could be paired with the Astro’s and Alpha’s. Spent the first afternoon of winter break up in the hills. I packed the blank pistol, and he pinned three nice coveys, (two mountain quail, and one valley quail). I haven’t tried the process on kennel panels, but when I had a trailerable saltwater boat, I would hit the rusty areas with a wire brush, then with a rust dissolver like Naval Jelly and prep again and paint those sections with a cold galvanizing compound every few years. Not much else to add except to point out, there are a whole lot of future risks that must be calculated when owning bird dogs. There is good reason many of us know our veterinarians on a first name basis, some in multiple states and still this is one that anyone with any experience avoids. Bird dogs...

I asked my daughter what she wanted to do for the day.
