Re: Positive Reinforcement Training With the Clicker
I believe it's the times when you're not happy, tired, impatient or _____ that the dog cues on as well as when your happy. I agree. That's why I don't train when I am not in the proper mood. Your voice carries baggage whether you realize it or not. Partial agreement on this one. Voice carries baggage if the trainer does not know how to use it properly. In your trainer's shoes, I would give the same advice. Given that your 2 yr old is just going through her second season, you probably don't have her nailed down tight yet. Dogs learning from other dogs goes both ways and I have seen a pup goad a young dog into behavior that they know is wrong but we...

My method is similar to Ray's stop to flush except I like to start at heel with a clipped wing bird in my pocket. I toss the bird and immediately whoa the dog with the leash. Reading this post reminds me of so many I've read in the past. A whole summer spent on nothing but birds and the kennel command? Solved it by covering the traps with dead grass. Dead grass is great but can be hard to find at time's. The strips can be covered with dead grass if it's there. I don't know if it's the "best kept secret" but it certainly is not something most people think about. A handler should almost never give a "single" command. Commands are usually paired with a release command, ie "whoa" and "move on" or "ok" go together or "recall" and "huntemup", "kennel" and "out"...

I don't think your dog needs FF at this stage. What typically happens with dogs like yours, usually first timers, is that you play lots of games early with toys. Pup retrieves bumpers, socks, sticks, crow bars, everything but birds. So, when pup is about a year old and you throw that first bird out ...

Wow, two weeks and no response. While you are waiting for your gsp to grow enough for the trainer, do just basic obedience stuff right now. "Never give a command you cannot enforce" is another way of saying that control begins very close and is then extended through various tools. In my experience, the "kennel" and "out" commands are the most under-trained command I see. People create problems for themselves in a couple of ways.
