Re: Puppy Training Concerns?

Thanks for the posts! It's nice to know I'm doing somethings right! :) Sounds like as long as I'm keeping that tail waging, no harm done! I'm planning on going out next week and getting him into a field with planted pigeons. Anything I should be careful about letting him do? i.e. chase flying birds,...

Puppy Training Concerns?

As I begin training my new pup, more and more questions arise!! Thanks in advance for the help! What should my training consist of with a 3 month old GWP? We've been together a week and a half now and I've been doing maybe 10 mins a day of training. In training I focus mostly on sit and heel but I'm...

Re: American Woodcock

I've seen most of my woodcock in marshy areas. I've never targeted them directly, but you come upon them every once in a while grouse hunting. They are definitely hard to shoot. Generally they flush to the tree line and zig zag back and forth making hitting those little buggers very difficult. They'...

Cool. Thanks for all the responses. It sounds like its a pretty common practice then. Around what age are you guys starting training like this?

Re: Ramp Training for Pointers

My understanding of the training is, once your dog is ready to start learning commands such as whoa, you can actually use a ramp system, so there is a up ramp, a level platform a couple feet wide, and a down ramp. I think the idea is that with the dog elevated they are less distracted and they can f...

Ramp Training for Pointers

Hello,

I have a 13 week old GWP. I'm wondering what you all think of using ramps for training exercises? I am 100% new to this so I don't know if this is a normal practice or if there are more effective methods out there. Thanks for the input,

Re: Bird season?

Dove is the 1st, grouse is the 17th and duck is the 24th...not sure how I should handle hunting this season with a 13 week old puppy. I want to get him out on the trail, but the fact of the matter is I've only had him for a week and he isn't gun trained yet and doesn't respond really well to the bas...

Re: Shotgun dilemma

An o/u is my preference but wingmaster is second. Just cant seem to get a good yildiz without waiting forever and paying way more than retail. I'll have to check out that yildiz one of these days. I've been wanting a light weight affordable 12ga o/u for pheasant hunting for a while now. Sounds like...

Tim, I didn't feel like you were blaming I think you have some good points in the discussion, you last one in my opinion is a great summary. There are very few problems that can be solved looking at them in a vaccuum, if they could life would be easier, almost always the root cause is related to so...

But why stop at simply passing judgment on those breeders rather than taking action and try to make a difference. That's the argument I believe she is making. Re: Neuter!

I dunno...I'm responsible for my dogs and their behavior and that's as far as it goes. What anyone else does is on them. However, I really resent the freakin' dog police trying to dictate how, when, if, where my dogs will or won't be bred, neutered, or left to live a life of intact celibacy. Sure t...

Re: Neuter!

I think, and correct me if I'm wrong Thorina, that her argument can be wrapped up as there are two types of dog owners, responsible and irresponsible. She believes, as do I, that this online forum community lies under the responsible category, meaning we are the type of dog owners that can handle ha...

Re: Neuter!

Has anyone found any research on dogs that were fixed after the two year mark and how they were effected? It seem like the majority of the research is focused on >1 year. I would love to leave my dog intact and plan to wait at least until two years before neutering, but being a first time dog owner ...

So are you still thinking wingmaster or a o/u? I can't hunt with a o/u because it usually takes at least 3 shells before I actually hit anything!

Re: timid shy pup scared of other dogs

I've had my first pup a grand total of 4 days so please don't take this as a smart or common practice, but it seemed to work for me. Yesterday, my GWP pup, Briar, who has been very social with other dogs so far, was snapped at by a little lap dog that was protecting a treat it was trying to eat. Bri...

I'll let you know when I find the cheap 870's, I find the in small gun shops in the off season, $150-$175 will get you a 12 gauge non-VR in 2 3/4", I use to find good deals at gun shows but in the last several years prices have not been good. I have though time driving by a gun shop without checkin...

This is why I'm always so confused when I meet someone who claims to not be a dog person...its like saying I'm not really into unconditional love. Well, having never met the man, I'd say his dog's loyalty is proof enough of his character. Too sad

Re: Shotgun dilemma

These are wingmaster not express and on either I planned on opening up to mod or imp mod. I understand that it is a wingmaster, but there are something like 6 million of them out there. Around me the plain barrel wingmaster would go for about $150 in average condition, and the vent rib about $225, ...

renting a house with a fenced yard. I'm planning on giving him a rigorous workout in the morning, letting him out at lunch, and then either walking him or do some training after work. You think that's a realistic solution to him being in a kennel during the day? Or am I kidding myself here?

Thanks!

Re: New Dog Owner

Thanks for the quick responses. So, in your opinion, the main difference between a $600 dog and a $2000 dog of the same breed is simply the time put into training by the breeder? Also, I hate have to focus so much on the financial aspect of the dog, but being fresh out of college and trying to pay b...

New Dog Owner

Hello, I am in the process of looking for my first dog. I am 24 years old, and a grouse and pheasant hunter. I'm interested in either a German Wirehaired Pointer or a Wiredhaired Pointing Griffon. I have zero experience buying dogs so I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me. Even down to the...
