Re: Bald eagle - swimming?
I saw the same thing while sitting in a duck blind year before last. Lac Vieux Desert. The guy with me said it can't be an eagle to which I replied yes, I have seen an eagle land on water and take off again but I have never seen them try to swim with a large fish! I have seen them take off with lots ...

Re: Help with choosing first gun dog
No offense taken AC, I have just seen to many chessies that were --for the lack of a better word--Bone Headed--One of the chessies in mind, had my dog right by the throat, trying to kill it, 30 seconds after I arrived at my buddies place in N Dakota. The next day, he had my buddies older Chessie by ...

I'm looking for some input on Iowa Woodcock. Are they in now, I see there is a Woodcock Wildlife MA near in Jasper County. Are there any other areas that would hold a good amount of Woodcock? Thank You, ROD

Yes, I can't wait for the 1 1/2 feet of snow to melt and have it warm up, -20 degrees this am again, here in N Wis, I called a friend up In the UP(Mi) who bands woodcock and I will be going with him this spring when the time comes. He said the woodcock (males) arrive the same time as the Robbins wit...

Re: Help with choosing first gun dog
Hey Double Bank Shot, Find a farm-silo with pigeons roosting there and talk to the owner, see if you can go in at night, scare the pigeons and they will fly into the sides of the silo, falling to the floor. It is only a job of picking them up and bagging them after that. I have done this many times....

Re: Help with choosing first gun dog
A Chessie is a much better cold weather water dog--- BUT---when bringing the pup home, stop and puchase one dozen baseball bats (for the finishing touches) A lab would most likely be your best bet in my opinion. I love Chessies, more so than labs. But, it is of my opinion that a some Chessies take a...

Re: What makes a good Grouse Pointer?
Were you finding a lot of birds this year up by you? I started to hunt with a guy I met just south of you and we had a great season! Good luck with your pup.[/quote] No, Unfortunately, most of the popple is way to old to be good for grouse and the logging on the Nicolet Nat Forest is at a standstill...

What makes a good Grouse Pointer?
I killed lots of grouse over my first grouse dog, Lady. I first hunted with bird dogs, over Ed Scherer's (world champion skeet shooter) dogs Buzz and Sally--English Setter and English Pointer. That was back in '94 and '95, when the population was at it lowest. We killed a few birds and I am sure if ...

Re: Pheasant Loads
As stated, any manufacturer, just buy the good loads--for Pheasant,-- Now for duck, we need at least 600 FPS for enough retained energy to penetrate to the vital area, if your load will still have this, at 35- 45 yards, go for it! The only one that I know shooting the very best, Heavi Shot, is a fri...

Re: The Ruffed Grouse Championship of America
The hunt in Phelps area will have no effect on bird pop. The RGS Nat. Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock hunt has had no effect on bird pop. in Itasca, St. louis, Akin, and Cass counties. What we have seen though is a huge influx of out of state hunters since the hunt started. It's nice to see you're limit...

Re: The Ruffed Grouse Championship of America
Yes, tough to do---the birds have to get up for you, sometimes you go 3 for 3, 4 for 4, this fall I killed 9 woodcock with 11 shots, fairly open shooting! I usually won't even shoot a woodcock but I've got a GWP pup that seems to like them! I had to force my other wirehairs to pick them up. 2 weeks ...

Re: The Ruffed Grouse Championship of America
That's where the skill comes in!! Find a deer bait, preferably corn that we put on a hook, climb into the tree----Seriously, if you don't think it takes skill to kill a grouse or woodcock, ON THE WING, 6 shells per team member, 3 grouse max, apiece, 3 woodcock, 6 hours to hunt neither early nor late...
