We have repaired two knee joint capsule ruptures and patellar ligament tears on one of our dogs. She got the original injury running on crusted snow and breaking through with a hind leg while turning. Same injury a little over a year later, other leg. $3,500 later she is fit, l00% sound and hunts ha...

My guess is Coccidiosis. Put them on medicated chick or turkey starter containing a coccidiostat, if they are not already. Re: How do you get your pups retreiving

I might leave retrieving for a while with the uninterested pup, and see what happens after you crank up her prey drive with introduction to birds. Here in North America, we would likely put her through a trained retrieve (also called Force Fetch), but not until she is a yearling or older. I have thr...

Re: Started with the clicker. Question.

George Hickox uses clicker techniques in pointing dog training. You may find helpful material on his website, as well as the very good descriptions offered already by other posters here. Clickers work really well to introduce new concepts and behaviours without a lot of negative pressure on the pup....

Re: One thing at a time ?

Short answer here is yes. For the pointing dogs, I use 'tone' for recall, 'nick, nick' on low for turn with me, and 'continuous' on low for stop. For the retriever, I use 'tone' for recall, 'nick' for sit, and 'continuous' on low for forcing to pile or casting. All of the tasks are taught slowly and ...

Re: Collar questions

I have one of each of these two collars, and this is the important difference which I have found between them. The sportdog, set on level one is too hot for a dog which doesn't need much stimulation. It is fine on the lab who needs level two or three, but is too hot for cueing our three britts. The ...

I think some people view the use of an ecollar as punitive. Some might even see the use of crates as punitive, but any tool can be used positively or negatively; including the human hand. I follow the Rick and Ronnie Smith philosophy of ecollar use and see it as a way to mimic regular collar cues at...

Mike B has given you good advice. Go to puppy class with your dog and take the whole family along. There is likely a racing pigeon club in your area. Look online, then contact one or two members to ask who might have weaned squabs to sell. Less stress on the babies if you don't have to ship them, and you probably can get a group of six or eight birds from one source. Good luck with your birds.

No need to cut them before pulling. You must get the two remaining ones out before her nose swells over them. I suggest getting her to a vet today. You can't just leave them in or there will be a serious infection. Good luck.
