Re: Quail issues, bumping
I believe you are expecting too much. Wild quail behave nothing like bird club pheasants; and a 20 month old shorthair is not yet reliable without regard for who is handling it. Every time the dog encounters a new scenario such as location; but especially location and type of game bird it may requir...

Re: Bloodlines verses Environment?
I believe most modern breedings of sporting dogs for field purposes have the genetics to be an average bird dog. Within every breeding there are varying degrees of characteristics, and within those characteristics varying degrees of what a person finds desirable. To me, short of the anomalistic “dog...

I agree with the premise Ezzy started. To a dog being in the house can mean nothing and then again, depending on what occurs in the house it can mean everything. To a very high degree virtually every functional dog breed; sporting, working and terriers has split. In most of the AF championships you have to have won a "qualifying stake" and present a win certificate to enter. In some of the dual sanctioned breed club stakes you run in them and can have the AKC win but not be awarded the AF/AFTCA Championship status

As described, I believe the percentages are probably low single digits. I suppose the question is what does that tell us? It is hard, and a great many dogs compete in juvenile stakes and never get the consistent training or conditioning to compete at the next level, those dogs pad the entries some. ...

This is against my better judgment... Training a gun dog to a finished product is a progression of steps and they correlate to the dog's maturity and the amount and timing of exposure the dog gets to the field and game. In my opinion, none of this can be looked at as simply as a one to one obedience...

CJ, what I want in a dog is fluid. It is constantly changing as my passion for the simplistic beauty in a dog's performance replaces my desire to see the dog as a tool, a means to an end in the hunt. But you can have it both ways... The questions are how much and when? No dog is ever "proofed" on "treats" the act of altering behavior is always a matter of discipline and education. The complete information is on the AKC website, but the summary version is: 6 points in 1 hour stakes designated as; through application and approval by AKC, as a Grand Stake. Three points must come from a win in these stakes and the points only apply after the FC and or AFC title has been awarded.
