Slistoe, I've ridden with Ferrel's young protege Ike, working derbies and it's like you and Ray have stated, they don't get free rein. They are trained to stay to the front and within contact of less than 400 yards. However, I've also ridden with Tommy Davis at his and Luke's summer camp and mostly ...

Re: Why are Bird Hunters Afraid of Field Trials
Here's my $0.02 on why some bird hunters are afraid of field trials. First off I think "afraid" isn't the right word, but maybe "shy away from" might be better. As the word "afraid" elicits a negative, defensive response from some. I have attended and participated and volunteered in trials (AKC, NV...

Re: Why are Bird Hunters Afraid of Field Trials
Ray, I think a lot of people that have never been to a trial, would be surprised what it takes to get a dog to a level of winning one. It's such a complicated thing and I can understand why most hunters don't want any part of them. The local club had a weekend horseback trial here a few months ago a...

Once you have a reliable recall ( perhaps collar conditioned) While you are doing the yard training get this dog in the field as much as you can. It would be best if you can find a large field with wild birds. let the dog run and chase with no restrictions except if you have to recall. just like ha...

I don't think you were very far off because the pros I know would probably say they prefer running on sharpies the most. But, different habitats hold different birds so they take what they get.

Quill, I think UJ caters to a very select group. Pretty silly to say someone is scared of wild birds. However, I've got a young derby who I run from foot on wild birds, but I won't kill birds for him this season because I want to keep him broke for spring trials. IMO breeding is about matching the best to the best available. Matching, meaning putting a dog with all the right stuff, but a sickle tail to a bitch with all the right stuff, with a straight tail as an example. There is no such thing as a perfect specimen. All dogs have flaws. Their brains, nose, d...

Luvthemud, I don't think he has an inexhaustible energy supply. The calories he gets from his nighttime meal gets him through his 1-1 1/2 hour workouts. Longer than that and he'll start to slow down.
