Re: Training a bird dog to become a shed dog?
V's are incredibly smart - sounds like you got a good one. My only suggestion is to maybe use a different collar on her when pursuing birds vs. hunting for sheds. So she knows what she's supposed to be doing out there. Mine is a great retriever and loves to go with the beagles rabbit hunting and bri...

The Perfect Start DVD outlines it in very detailed fashion. Also, if you are anywhere near North Missouri, they have clinics (4-day usually) that you can attend and learn to train the dog yourself. Best money I've ever spent. Jon is very, very good with Vizslas.

If you had an older dog that was not too rough, that dog would help "handle it" for you. A well-timed correction is what is necessary - other dogs do it quickly, loudly, and it's over fast. There is nothing wrong with a correction for this type of behavior. Just don't overreact.

She'll get through this and be fine. Catching poor flying birds...that's a whole 'nother issue. If you want a pointing dog, you can't let them catch birds on the ground that haven't been pointed and shot. Instead of quail, get yourself some homing pigeons and use them for your training - they are gr...

It sounds too easy to be true, but if he respects and listens to the pinch collar, then use the pinch collar. My dogs respond to the e-collar. They never go to the field without one on. Ever. I don't have to use it on the Pointers 98% of the time, the GSP's from 50% to 80% and the Vizsla hasn't need...

Re: Help! Need advice about "one-man" dog
Having fostered and "foster-failure" almost 100 birddogs, I will tell you, sometimes the dog just picks you. My husband's first chessie hated me (I feed them, I train them, I run them on birds) and loved him. Our young GSP that I trained solo, fed, and exercised absolutely adores him. Sometimes it's...

Jon, Check out Perfection Kennel. If you're an amateur trainer, Jon is the greatest to work with. Re: 7 month old Vizsla becoming whiny
Ignore first, if it continues, you will have to scold her. It may not stop. It's hard to admit, but my V won't whine at all at my trainer's place (even in the house), but when I get him home, I don't follow up on it enough so that he does still whine here. If I'd stopped it early on, I think that wo...

Re: 7 month old Vizsla becoming whiny
You likely did get her too soon, V's are slow to mature and getting one at 9-10 weeks is closer to ideal. My breeder wouldn't let them go home until 10 weeks of age because they tend to become too clingy and less independent when left sooner. However, a whiny Vizsla is certainly normal. Mine is quit...

I have to weigh in on the trainer issue. If you want to get the dog moving forward, at least 2 months, and preferably 3 will be what it takes. That, at about a year old. I don't like to hunt quail after 2pm or so if it's going to be a cold night. They benefit from being grouped in a covey at sunset. More eyes to watch for predators plus increased thermal cover from coveying up.

A year old is a good time to send the pup. 3 months is a good time-frame to expect some real progress. A month will basically do very little for the dog's long term training. The first full week you can't expect much real progress as the trainer is just getting to know your dog. Basic obedience, her...

What Ray says!
Also, what is it you're doing with the dog right now? I wasn't clear on that. Pre-season for me means lots of pigeons for her to point. Always finding a bird every time we go out - trying hard not to run the dog without finding birds (unless you're roading the dog).

If you haven't already picked the pup up, leave it with it's littermates until it's 10 weeks old. That will handle a lot of bite inhibition and dog on dog socialization quickly and easily. Pigeons are much hardier and easier to keep than other game birds. Also, they are reusable as they home back to the coop so you can use them all day long for fly away drills and whoa/steady training.
