Since I'm not a breeder, it's of little concern to me but I suppose the Ryman setter is also an offshoot of the English setter, no?

Thanks everyone.
As for the OP, another terrific thing about Kyle is that throughout the purchasing process he never took longer than an hour or two to return an e-mail. I admire that and in today's world, I'm growing increasingly intolerant of not hearing back from people.

How old is your pup and what prior experiences has he had? Does he show interest in "bleep" birds?
At 4 months, I put a pigeon in a cage and let my setter have at it..... he went ape over it and I knew I had a bird dog.

I'm not sold on the gps units. Have the pathfinder and alpha, the old Dogtra 2500 T&B is so much easier. I'm sure the gps would come in handy at some point. From what I've noticed the last 2 weeks, to much time spent looking at the phone or handheld. In a month I want to be looking down shotgun bar...

You don't need to look at the Alpha 100 to correct but you do to adjust the intensity.
I have an Alpha 100 and TT15 and I would pay five times as much for it. It makes hunting a pure joy...and a quiet joy.

I simply don't get the argument against the e-collar. If you're afraid of messing up, don't mess up. I'm very fortunate to live beside a several hundred acre swamp and woods that has lately held a good population of woodcock. My setter is on point right at the edge of my property several times a week. He wears his Alpha collar almost every day. He's incredibly staunch now.

Re: Training With Wild Birds, Wisconsin
Great info already supplied! I would definitely run on wild birds but not too frequently. Pigeons are vital in my processes because they are strong fliers that don't land prematurely as do other pen-raised game birds. There are some situations you should be aware of though. Running on wild birds is...

Being a French Brittany guy, I have 14 here right now but only own 12, I think I can reasonably say don't shoot non pointed birds. Don't shoot.
I did pretty much what the OP describes with my Brittany. She never became fully staunch.
My current setter will stand over a point while I go have breakfast. That's due to launchers and pigeons.

A 330 Conibear is nasty....how much time do you have? I can free one with a short length of rope pretty quickly but if it takes any amount of time to discover the dog, I can't see them surviving.
It just shouldn't happen.

I live in MA and as an ardent outdoors man, I used to trap until the libs outlawed it here in '96. So I am anything but anti-trapper BUT all conibear traps should be underwater or elevated above where a dog can reach. Foothold traps are perfectly capable of catching fox, coyote, bobcat, wolf and lyn...

I was pondering just how bright my setter is compared to all of my other dogs. He's going on 2 1/2 and the number of words and terms he knows is amazing.
