Re: Reasonable First Year Expectations
Thanks Leeza....don't know why I didn't see your post before~ Yesterday was Whip's first exposure to pigeons. I placed one in a small metal dog crate and lead him to it. He pointed from some distance as he's been doing with the robins and doves but then broke of course. He went absolutely crazy abou...

Re: Trapping pigeons
Well after a futile month of watching dozens of birds all around my trap and not a feather to show for it, I took it away yesterday. Seems that there's just so much hay feed for them they have no interest in corn. One of the farm hands told me that he's just seen rats taking the corn. I spoke to the...

Hope your brother makes a speedy recovery. I ride a Harley low rider myself. I ride on very rural roads but I know there's still risks. It's simply too much fun and too ingrained in me to stop! That question remains to be answered firelight. Again, he has so much area to roam, I'm hoping he'll not care to go out there. I've taught other dogs to avoid it and this setter's simply the easiest dog I've ever had to train.

ezzy, I don't actually have invisible fencing, I just created a modified version of that idea by placing a string of marker flags and using the e-collar. Well my setter turns 5 months on Saturday and has lately just begun to want to head out toward the road. We live on a rural property with a 200ft driveway. I had to retrieve him from the road just once before I knew that that had to not happen again. Yesterday was time for Whip to meet Ray O Vac. Ju...

My Setter's been very easy on us but for the first week or so I placed his sleeping crate elevated right beside the bed. When he cried, I'd just stick my fingers through the gate and he'd lick, nibble a bit and fall back to sleep when he knew I was right there. Only took a week to ten days or so bef...

Had my 5 month setter prancing around in my trout stream for the first time yesterday. He was adorable feeling water for the first time. It was only about 8 to 10 inches deep so he didn't have to swim.
Yeah, I couldn't imagine having kept him from the woods til now.

I feel for you. My 5 month old setter doesn't seem to be a severe case like you're dealing with but he's still a teething puppy figuring out the world around him. I've found that I can stop rambunctious puppy biting by holding his snout while saying NO very sternly and then immediately releasing the...

Found all of the corn gone inside and out of the trap so in case it was pigeon work, I rebaited with corn and dropped the bobs yesterday. The hay feed was scattered about as well. I think the pigeons just pick away the stuff that's in the hay and don't actually eat the hay itself. I'll check again t...

hmmmm, interesting. I don't know if they're used. Not sure if they're protected.
I dropped the bobs on my trap this afternoon. It may have been too early but there is some disturbance of the bait and there's been several birds right there on the ground near the trap when I pull up.
